Sounds pretty good to me too. Going to have to give this a shot (especially with 25 free downloads right off the bat ... Neon Bible here I come :) )

i really like this site. thanks. but i hate their site functionality, someone needs to redesign that.

not that it matters, but AllOfMp3 are pirates, no if, ands, or buts. the US has tried to force Russia to close them down, but... well, Putin and all that.

I don't care what ppl do, as i'm no fan of the mafiaa, but ppl shouldn't delude themselves that they're doing things legally by downloading from there. all they're doing is paying someone to make their pirating a little easier.

I use both eMusic and iTMS as well as order CD's online and go to the local record stores and buy cd's. For downloading music I like them both and will continue to use them both. Though I find a lot more music on eMusic to download than I do on iTunes. Within a day of my song download limit resetting on eMusic I use them all up and have to wait another 28 days :)

emusic.com has supplied all my needs since May of 2006. Every month my downloads refresh ($9.99US for 40) and every month I use them up, but my "saved for later" list never seems to get any shorter. Speaking of which, only three days to go until refresh!

One of my favorite pastimes is reading all the "This site SUX!" threads on their message boards. It's hilarious how many people sign up without a little investigation and then come complain that they can't find any 311 or Eminem.

What are the quality options for downloads on eMusic and Allofmp3?
Q: What is a bitrate? At what bitrate are eMusic's MP3s encoded at?

A: Bitrate is the number of bits per second used in the encoding process. A higher bitrate (a.k.a encoding rate) usually means a larger size file, but higher quality sound. eMusic currently encodes its MP3s using VBR (Variable Bit Rate). VBR is a type of audio compression that allows certain sections of the audio to be encoded at different bit rates. The intricate audio sounds are encoded at a higher rate while the simple sounds are encoded at a lower rate. This is different than standard bit rate encoding, which allows for all of the sounds to be encoded at the same rate. The average bit rate used for VBR on eMusic is 192k. Essentially VBR encoding gives you the best possible sound quality in the smallest file size possible.

What are the quality options for downloads on eMusic and Allofmp3?

emusic downloads come as VBR MP3 files. Out of 482 tracks I have as low as 126kbps and as high as 259kbps.

The rough breakdown is (175) tracks are 200+ kbps, (119) tracks are 190-199 kbps, (76) tracks are 180-189 kbps, (49) tracks are 170-179 kbps, (45) tracks are 140-169 kbps, and the last (9) tracks are 126-137 kbps.

So 61% of my emusic downloads are at least 190kbps.

Do they? Mine aren't showing any.

If you enable iTunes to download album art from the iTS, when you add your emusic downloads to iTunes it will fetch the art. Otherwise I don't think emu* includes album art. When I download from them, it creates a folder for the artist on my desktop and I drag that to my library in iTunes. Once it adds it to that, I delete the folder created from the download process.

* all the cool kids call it "emu" for short

Exactly, you are better off getting the tracks from Limewire or similar, then you at least aren't funding a criminal organisation at the same time.

Cheers, I didn't know iTunes had that feature! It's not eMusic providing the cover art admittedly - but thanks, that's useful to know.

Just in case you don't know where to look; iTunes Preferences, general tab, and make sure "Automatically download missing album artwork" is checked.

Yep. If it weren't for you two already having said it, I would have piped up with the same thing.

Buy it legally, or pirate it. But don't buy it illegally.

I subscribed to it for the 25 free downloads. Ended up paying for one month to get 30 tracks more and cancelled after I spent all of the dowloads. It really is a nice music service, no DRM, decent quality and they have music that I like, but I'd prefer to pay per track instead of monthly for certain amount of DLs.

iTunes isn't an option for me, really. Bad quality and DRM...

I tried emusic, used the 30free was about to cancel but they talked me into a $6/20 a month to give it another chance. I still didn't find much to download and didn't like the 'use it or loose it' rule so after that test period was over I canceled again. It's not that they didn't have some good stuff, only that I already had CDs of the 'good stuff' in my collection. I did not like the way you have to preview music and told them so in why I was dropping the service.

The only reason i won't buy from iTMS is the 128kbts tracks. I will not buy from them unless they go to 192kbs+. If they did that, it'd be a winner in my book.
I know the limitations of servers for downloads, but come on. The whole iPod/iTunes thing has lost inertia (at least it seems to me) - if they bust out with higher quality music files and a new, touchscreen iPod or some super-pod then I think they'd jump start the whole system again. :)

Haha. I think an angry mob would ensue. :p I can just see it now, the thousands of threads, "Why Apple?!!1!1! Let us all re-download all of our music! I feel gypped!" "ZOMFG!!1! Apple betrays loyal iTMS customers!!!"

Your most likely right. However, i just might find myself re-downloading some of the content, but I'm pretty sure most of the "main-stream" iPod users (i.e. those you see walking on college campuses still using the pack-in earbuds) won't know the change unless apple came out and hit them in the face with it. ;)

Where did you get this deal? Now it's 30 for $9.99 or 50 for $14.99.

Back when I signed up it was $10 for 40. A few months later they changed it, but allowed people to keep their old deals. Only problem now is I can never change my service terms or I lose my "grandfather" status.

Used to be $10 for 40, $15 for 65, and $20 for 90. Booster packs were way cheaper too. Last booster pack I bought was $15 for 50 DLs. Now they aren't worth it.

I'm in the same boat, but I have the 65 DL pack. When I joined it was $15 unlimited DLs.

I used the 25 free downloads that they advertise in MacWorld every month. I got some good stuff, but the tags were incomplete. Missing artwork isn't a pain anymore, but track numers and album years are annoying to enter manually.

I buy infrequently, so iTMS is perfect for me.

I have to say though, Apple's biggest future challenge will be how to increase the quality of the music on the iTMS (which they will have to do at some point) without causing a revolt...
