Steve announced that Apple is doing away with the what i consider to be the iconic blue desktop wallpapers that have been in OSX since the beginning. He says "nobody uses it" but me and all my friends still do. Even if i switch it to something else I still always find my self going back to it. Its almost ubiquitous to Macs now. I know that everything comes to an end...but...its still sad to see it go :(

So heres to you blue desktop picture...RIP 2007.

there will be an option to use your own wall paper. in that case i will make a screenshot of tiger and use it as desktop in leopard. blue background forever!

You could use a third party device to attain more blueness.

can any of you lucky WWDC people who got a copy of leopard tell us if there is a new blue background in there any where?

Steve said they are making the menu bar transparent to make your own pictures look good, but transparent UI elements really limit your choice of picture, because you have to choose something with which the UI is still readable.

Sadly, telling us that is probably a violation of the NDA since that isn't information that's been released to the public yet.

More than that, I was under the impression that Steve said during the keynote that the background he was using wasn't the default background, but one they had chosen to show off the transparent menu bar and reflective dock?

Is that not true?

If the blue is gone, then is your desktop background on the log-in screen going to be the grass or a specified picture?

Apparently the menu bar actually does analyze the wallpaper and change accordingly; so it's not really 'transparent' as much as it is adaptive.

I still from time to time use the tiger blue background, its the little things that count

I'm sure someone will create their own rendition though, if they don't I will :p

Where'd you hear this?

It was mentioned in the keynote, I believe. The menubar will adapt to your background; a darker image will result in less transparency. If the menubar didn't have this feature it would be silly because you'd be forced to have a light image––and I like my black NASA space images.

Steve said it would adapt to your background, yes, but certainly didn't elaborate. I assumed "adapt" just meant.... transparency. It would be cool if there were more to it though.

I thought he said that they chose it as the default to point out to new users that they can use their own photos, too. Besides, it's in all their screenshots on the website plus it appears the new Desktop folder icon uses the same picture (like the current icon uses the blue).

I would rather the blue background. I couldn't imagine how awful a lab full of Mac OS X computers would look at the login screen with that green grass.

I wonder what the server background will look like - a greyscale version of the grass? dead grass?
