Here are the release notes for the newest version of Goodreader:

    What's New in Version 2.7.4
    ● added support for inter-app Document Sharing: other apps (including stock Mail app) can open their files in GoodReader; GoodReader can open its files in other apps which support Document Sharing
    ● minor user interface improvements

Looks like some sort of cross App file sharing is possible but it's not clear to me how.

You just click and hold on a file in another app such as Mail and a menu comes up where you can choose to open the file in Goodreader.

    Ah!

No, click "Manage Files" in GoodReader then on the right hand side select "Open In' and a menu will pop-up over the file name with a list of programs that can open the file.

This is good! Still a need to go "the other way" i.e. from say Pages, into Goodreader...

Yea, especially if Goodreader eventually adds printing support.

If each developer supported Document Sharing you could even open a PDF in Pages, edit and save it and then open in Air Sharing HD to print.

    Hey Devs! Get crackin'! :D

Agreed, same thing with Air Sharing HD...the only workaround right now is to email the thing back to yourself, save it in Goodreader or Air Sharing and then do with it as you wish.

Wonder if Goodreader will be adding printer support...

BTW when you do the email route as described, and you (re)save the document in GR or AS, what's the file name? The same as the one you exported/opened in Pages from AS in the first place? If so does it Save over the prior version and prompt you with a "File With That Name Already Exists" type warning??

Or, does the email route result in a different file name?

pages needs to get crackin on adding document sharing support.

This is going to get very inefficient considering each app will have a version of the file because apps don't share the file, the copy it to the new app. So you could have 3 different versions all sitting in different apps.

I wish Apple would just allow a traditional file system with apple ingenuity.

Well if Apple sticks to its misguided guns on this then it certainly presents a wide-open door to an aggressive dev who wants to develop their own basic word processing app. Or a relatively simple spreadsheet app.

Air sharing appends the file name.

I'd also like to see a program like 'iAnnotate PDF' support document sharing so PDFs could be shared between the two.

    Help! I can't figure this out…

OK…I've got some single-page PDF's in my mail app.

With single-page pdf's, they open in the mail viewer, so I can see the entire pdf. There's not the little icon for the file. So, because of that, I can't open the files with GoodReader; at least, I can't figure out how.

I've been able to open multi-page PDFs and zip files using document sharing, but not single page PDF's. Is there a way to do this that I'm missing?

    Thanks!

IIRC, there's something about this in the "How To" Help files within GoodReader. Read "How do I read my email attachments in GoodReader?". Is that what you mean?

No, I mean yes, but no. :)

I've read the "How to" at GoodReader. It speaks generally about how to open a document into GoodReader, and this works great for multi-page pdf's and other documents which present as a document icon in the mail app.

But, single-page pdf's don't present as a document icon in the mail app, they open in the mail app, so you see the entire document, not just the icon for the document. Once the document is open in the mail viewer, there seems to be no way to "open" that document into GoodReader. The "How To" at GoodReader doesn't seem to address this.

    Unless I'm missing something?

Goodreader can connect directly to your email server.

Yeah, I got that. It just seems an extra step, inelegant solution to this issue.

I get that this is an Apple problem, not a GoodReader problem (as I understand it), but to get used to doing things 1 way (using the "open in GoodReader" function) and then have to do it in a different way for special instances of documents seems clunky.

But, thanks for the advice. I do need to set that up in good reader.

I haven't tried this but what if you tap and hold on the page in Mail? Perhaps a menu will pop up...worth a shot anyway.

yeah, I tried that. A menu does pop up, but it doesn't include the option to open in goodreader.

I confess, I'm new to the app and still finding my way around it but I'm impressed with the way that the devs are continually updating and trying to make it even better. When I returned a new iPad dock last Thursday, I loaded the emailed receipt from the Apple Store into GoodReader on my iPhone and took it to the Apple Store. Sales rep read the numbers off the doc on my iPhone and sent me on my way, refund handled in a flash. :)

    Cool.

…because you couldn't have shown them the email? ;-)

Glad you like the program. I do too.
