Google's Android operating system for smartphones is almost ready and it is touted to be the most dangerous competitor to Apple's own iPhone 3G, not considering Microsoft's Windows Mobile 7 yet. Last week, we did see some leaked snapshots of the HTC Dream - the first Android powered smartphone, which is to be launched in a couple of months. Now, if Google's and partly HTC's reputation is anything to go by, we can be almost sure that the Android powered Dream should most probably be an iPhone 3G killer. In this article we try to pit Android based phones (the Dream, as of yet) against the Apple iPhone 3G.

As the HTC Dream's hardware specs are not yet clear, we will mostly concentrate on the software and operating system front. Also, the hardware comparision between the Android based phones and the iPhone 3G isn't fair at all as there will be many Android phones coming out in the next year from most of the members of the Open Handset Alliance, each with a wide range of hardware components so the iPhone 3G probably doesn't even stand much of a chance on the hardware front. Still, for the sake of fairness, we try to pit the iPhone 3G against the HTC Dream when it comes to hardware.

When it comes to design, the iPhone 3G wins hands down against the HTC Dream. The leaked images of the HTC Dream reveal a kiddish design, with rounded edges and a hideous sliding QWERTY keypad implementation. HTC's design team could certainly have done a much better job with the first Android phone. The Dream has evoked very similar reactions from across the internet. The build quality does seem to be decent though. Also a bigger display size would have helped it a lot. Also, the iPhone excels when it comes to hardware components, except for some drawbacks like the camera, but overall it is superb. What it lags in are the software restrictions. We would surely hand this one to the iPhone 3G.
    Winner: iPhone 3G

Well ,the only enemy of iPhone 3G is the MZ M8, for it "supposed" himself to be better, so I just think it's better. "Compared" to it, HTC is just sh*t like JAck Wong used to say:D. Anyway the prices of HTC is highly unaffordable

Compare it to the HTC Touch HD. Touch HD wins hands down in every department except the OS (which android will be able to be run on it, so we don't know about that yet)

I'm going to wait until the phone is actually released before I deem it an iPhone killer. Definitely looks capable, but I don't want to get excited yet.

Also, I had zero doubt who would be claimed the winner in that blog article..especially seeing the it's called "android geek".:p

    Never seen this before!

Note that the reviewer in question clearly never even saw the phone, and was writing an article based entirely on screen shots and YouTube.

Do you remember how, shortly after the iPod came out, there were a string of mp3 players that all had better hardware than the iPod? In fact, some of these were available before the iPod came out. Yet today, the iPod has over 70% of the market.

I'm actually very interested in Android because of the open-ness of the system. Yet I find it very difficult to believe that it will be an iPhone killer. I've used lots of Google software over the years, and most of it sucks. Chrome is actually one of the first apps I've seen from them that's usable.

    Time will tell.

One problem with the M8: it still doesn't exist as yet, outside of some images, a video showing a prototype lagging worse than 2.0, and a mock up that only displayed screen shots. yet it's been "announced" as long as the iphone has been shipping and in people's hands.

Wow. There are so many things wrong with that article it doesn't deserve a detailed analysis.

From the article, "Please note that it isn't possible to make a clear and unbiased decision yet as the HTC Dream isn't out yet. ."

    'nuff said.

Agreed. I've seen some pictures of it and it doesn't look to great, but I'm keeping an open mind until it is out and someone reviews an actual working unit.

Ummm there is no comparison to make. One product exists in the mass market, the other does not.

Come back when there is an actual product in-hand that can be compared. I'm open to an "iPhone competitor" and would welcome it with very open arms. I just can't take some stupid opinion based on a few photos and specs found on the net.
