Well… I believe Microsoft tried to pay Apple but they chose Google anyway because they just had a better product…. So probably not any money in the world for Apple to choose anything other Google, hence why it’s of argument by Google to pay for being the default if Apple effectively where never going to pick anything else

Isn’t Kagi also a paid service, which is why it’s ad-free?

Imagine if Apple is like alright, you can NOT pay us but see what we’ll do then…what if this entire search debacle is designed by Apple (Steve jobs?) to where goog is literally empowering Apple with money for something Apple would’ve done freely anyway?….in THAT case yeah, obv. everybody go switch your search engine in safari but other than that? Keep the deal going?… smh

I still hate those optics tho, ugh…apple deals with goog? …SMH

As much as I dislike Google's data mining practises, until a better search alternative comes along, I'll keep using it.

For once I agree with Google - it was Apple's decision to go with them (those billions helped sway the decision). Why should Google be punished for offering a better product versus their competition?

I just wish Safari would prompt you when you first open and ask what you want your default to be. It’s bonkers that it just defaults to Google. That first visit just sends all your device info right to Google without consent.
I know, I know, they have it already blah blah blah but it just feels right to have a prompt and a choice first, rather then have Google rammed down your throat without a choice.

I haven’t used Google as a primary or even secondary search engine since around 2017. I think, I used it maybe twice in the last 12 months.

I mainly use Leo and Duck Duck Go, or Ecosia as a backup.

i dont see much ads using brave search. DuckDuckGo has a disable ads options burried in the settings IIRC. idk if they took it out now. If you are European and feel patriotic, you could use Qwant. none intrusive ads.

It is, and it's a service I don't personally mind paying for. I'd suggest others "vote with their wallets" and not use Google search either, but I recognise this isn't feasible for everyone; and that Google might even be providing better results for their specific use-cases.

My main point however is that Google is too big to fail, and Apple & Google joining forces is in my head bad for the consumers. Google might be in the clear legally, but the quality of their offerings is getting worse and worse and it is not a company I will personally be cheering on as it uses every resource available to stomp out competition.

Let's remember that this is the same Google that keeps introducing features that drive traffic away from the websites in the search results with features like AI summary and AMP — arguably these features provide no net benefit to consumers and make the state of the open web worse for everyone. They're also not trying to show us the best search results, as the top of each results page is riddled with ads. Some of the ads have also been flagged by users as complete scams which could be dangerous.

So what exactly has improved after this lawsuit?

I have been able to switch my search engine to DDG since the very start. It's not like the terms of this arrangement with Google locked users into google search and you could not use any other search engine.
