I don't know about Yahoo, but if you add a google account to iOS mail (as a google account), you will be prompted for the authenticator code during the account addition process. If you add it as IMAP (or Exchange if you have a google apps account), you'll need to use an App password

I think they are really hardening the password capture process for the mail app with third party accounts - especially yahoo which has been hacked/compromised several times in the past several years. with yahoo pop/imap account the authentication is no longer done in the app, and takes the user out to a yahoo authentication page for password entry, and then back to the ios mail app. Seems to work now.

I only got this NEW notification and requirement to re-enter the password at the third party site in ios 9.1 B5, with B4 it was still working as previously.

Don't think you need the authenticator for Gmail. I have two-factor turned on and all I had to do was generate app-specific passwords for my Mac and iOS devices. Can't remember if I needed to re-add the Gmail accounts or if I got prompted to enter a password, at which point I entered the app-specific passwords (last generated for iOS back in 2014).

Worst case scenario, might have to remove the accounts and re-add them, but since Gmail is IMAP, won't lose anything. But may be painfully slow to download all your e-mail to the device again.

I think I may have forgotten how to use Settings, because I cannot find where to re-enter my password for my Google accounts on iOS 9.1. Right now I'm having trouble getting mail, but I don't know where to reauthenticate...

It didn't appear there for some reason. I didn't have the option to edit my password when the authentication failed; and it was failing for all my accounts. However, removing one and reinstating it, made all the accounts work again. Weird indeed.

Just speculation here, because I have a general idea, but not specifics, but believe the password box not being present is due to Google uses OAuth for authentication these days. Basically, kinda works like ApplePay in that the real passcode is not passed around. Google assigns a token to your credentials and that is what's used to connect to the servers.

The initial account create in the mail settings verifies you, then you get the token assigned to you and the mail app.

Take a look under SMTP settings: there you will see that Gmail uses OAuth for contacting the SMTP servers image1.PNG
