got it!

it would be nice if it could determine what type of search you were doing... contact, internet, wikipedia or local map...

yeah, I thought of that because that is usually how I do a google search, but I think it would be nice to perhaps say 'maps taco bell' instead of selecting maps, then taco bell to get location based searches

works great....EXECPT...voice search doesnt do contacts... only if you type the search in... I have gone though all the menus.. if i type home i get my home contact if i say home.. i get a google search for home.....wtf...

Same here... It must not be able to search the phone via search yet, which is very strange... I have tried saying "call" before the name I am trying to dial, but that just does a search for "call jennifer"

Anyone notice that the App Store icon on the iPhone shows the little red notice that an update is available. I looked at Updates, and it's the Google Mobile App I just deleted and reinstalled. The Updates section shows the app, and when I click on it shows up with a grayed out "Installed". Anyone get rid of this notice? If so, how?

By the way, this app is pretty sweet!

Get rid of the notice... No Mine is doing the same thing for Briefcase as well right now. Quite annoying to say the least.

Try syncing now to remove.

Same here. Maybe a bug?
Although in the demo video you only see contacts appear in the keyboard search demo at the end... hmmm

This seems to be a small bug. I got rid of mine by deleting the app directly using your iPhone, then re-installing using the iPhone. Don't go through iTunes. However, while in iTunes, without your phone hooked-up, delete and re-install the app. So, you basically have to update both your iTunes and your iPhone separately.

This was a very strange way for an app to be updated. It never showed up in the "search for updates" function of iTunes. For some reason, I think Google and Apple have a different type of relationship and this app did not go through the regular app approval process. Google said it was coming out and it did, and in an usual manner.

Besides this, this app has quickly became my #1 favorite. A few things; you should not have to say (your town) before a search item. The app should prompt you asking if you should use your present GPS location. Click yes. You shouldn't have to ask for a "map" either. Either it will give you a map on the search results or it will give you a blue "directions" link that you can tap to be brought to google Maps.

Right now, it is unfortunate that you cannot use it to dial a number. You cannot say "call so-and-so" or "call 555-555-5555." It will just give you the search items for those commands. Like someone else pointed out, you need to manually type to search contacts. I have a feeling that voice dialing and voice contact search are both already very possible, but they are being held back for political reasons.

i really hope its a bug as opposed to political reasons.... arnt there other voice dialing apps in the store?

regardless....the app is great and makes getting some things done easier...and the price is right....

No need to delete the app anymore - I got the update notice this evening - updated and have the voice searching...
:D

It would seem like such a natural feature, I find it hard to believe that voice searching for contacts (and calling) was left out as an oversight/bug. There are some very basic and useful features that are inexplicably missing from the iPhone for God only knows what reason - add this to the list. And for people who say; "well, Google made this app, Apple didn't." Truth is, Apple has been carefully dictating/micromanaging exactly what features should be included on the apps and what shouldn't be.

As so often there was NO red badge at the Apps icon but when I went to "Updates" it was there in the list. Updated. I had to switch on Voice Search manually (it was off by default). German-language iPhone.

Great app. Why can't we us voice search on our contacts? We can search our contacts through the Google App so why not with voice search?

So far for me the search has been very accurate.

I tried to screw with it by saying "Hiphopopotamus versus Rhymnocerus" (popular Flight of the Conchords song). I was very surprised when it found it.

I tried this one out today, but I didn't manage to get even one of my search queries right. Maybe it's becuase of my accent? I tried speaking english, but it obviously wasn't good enough. I just hope they port it for more languages. Until then I'll work on my accent and my pronunciation :)

ramblin wreck from georgia tech...

Anyway this has to be my most pleasant surprise app so far.

Definitely an app worth having on the phone.

It's recognition has been spot on for me, although I don't really have an accent though (midwest).

Really awesome Google. Except it doesn't work with speech.
Tried it on two different iPhones and it wouldn’t recognize the phrase 7 times, not even when searching for Porn. :p
