Well, apparently they don't lol ... I wish they did because I would love one. The picture attached shows the couple I was referring to.

Honestly, Google Chrome or any web browser is going to give you the best Gmail experience you can get. I doubt Google will ever make an app for a desktop operating system, because really there is no point. The web browser is the app.

If iOS would allow me to use it as my default mail app then I'd be happier. But it won't let me send a message out from other apps without using the built in mail client. Blah.

Damn it. I knew it was too good to be true :( I have been using the default email client via an exchange account (for push) and just heard about this Gmail app update today. So I downloaded it to give it anther shot and everything seems to work perfectly to the point where I could completely switch over to it. But I hadn't thought of this. Why we forced to use the built-in client is beyond me.

gmail app for lion .. I know it is iOS, that is why I said I hope they updated it since they are releasing it for iOS ...

There is no (Google made) gmail app for OS X Lion. The only gmail related app for OS X is the Google Notifier app - is this what you're referring to?

<yawn> Still don't care.

Gmail is terrible and their iOS app isn't any better.

Yawn, we still dont care about another person that slates anything by Google with no merit or reason.

In a nutshell? Because Apple want you using their apps. At some point they will be forced to add in the ability to choose how files are opened, they will already know this. If Windows locked people down to opening URL's with IE and emails with Outlook or Live mail or whatever its now called, the competition commission's would be all over them. They were previously in trouble for this once before.

Apple are no different here. They have a monopoly on the mobile OS market, and at some point someone will step in and say:

1 - Apple MUST allow users to choose how files are opened
2 - Apple MUST allow users to install 3rd party content (i.e not in the appstore)
3 - Apple MUST reduce their monopoly by allowing other software developers greater access to the platform.

Uh. Whuh?

Don't hold your breath on those "MUST"s

This is certainly an improvement - but I wish they'd update the app to handle multiple accounts, the way their Android app does.

If notifications matter to you, this app makes sense. Otherwise, there doesn't appear to be any advantage to this over just adding a icon "bookmark" on your homescreen/springboard to your Gmail using Safari.

I do think the way they handle Gmail on mobile browsers is pretty darn slick.

That's the thing, I don't like Gmail on mobile Safari - it's clunky and slow, scrolling is delayed and moving around folders is sluggish. The GMail app is a minor improvement on that but could still do with a performance upgrade. Performance and speed is the main reason I stick the native Mail app.

No more authentication!!!

Being able to stay logged in indefinitely- and NOT having to try and swap quickly back and forth between the Google authentication app and the Gmail app- is easily the best part of this for me.

I get sometimes 2-3 sounds but I just received 1 Email
even when I read the Email but sometime get sound :(

Do you have it set up on multiple devices and you're hearing each device receive the email?

I have it set up on my iPhone and iPad so when I get a message, they both beep - and it just went off right now..

So I haven't experienced any double or triple beeps on incoming messages per device.

How stable has this been? It keeps crashing for me on the iOS 6 beta. Wondering if it is ios or the app...

I'm using iOS 5.1.1 on my iPhone and iPad, and the latest Gmail update has been running fine for me. I've made it my default email client since yesterday to see if I can get used to it over the native Mail app. So far, so good; no crashes here.

thats the apple way, there was a point where they would not allow apps that have duplicate functions that were already built-in. I think were making progress...slow but its still progress.

I left the exchange account active for because you cant email content from any apps liek tweets and link etc. but i did turn off all notifications and sounds for email. Gmail is my semi-default

now is working fine
thank you very much
also I deleted sparrow :))) :)

Good deal!

---------

I've been using the Gmail app as primary email client for the last couple of days now and I like it so far. It was the lack of notifications that kept me from using it before.

I disabled the mail feature in my configured accounts in the native mail app, except my .mac account which I left active so that I can still send emails from other apps, since Apple won't let another mail app be the system default. I also set up my .mac account to auto-forward emails to my Gmail account.

So far, so good.

I think the only bad thing that I see in the app is the scrolling animation is atrocious. I hope they fix it.

Having troubles with embedded links on the iOS app in emails...everytime I press the hyperlink it takes me to a new window with no content, just blank screen with the web page title. Any ideas?

I am enjoying the app immensely....however I have noticed that unread email notifications are not being deleted from my notification centre - even after I tap on them directly, get sent to the gmail app, and read the email. In fact, they remain even if I power down, and restart the ipad...very strange. I am not having this problem with any other app.

Has anyone else come across this glitch? I have tried deleting and reinstalling the app to no avail! I am fresh out of ideas here...

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers

Wow, I've stopped waiting for this and assumed it'll never come. o_O

Thank you.

Now, the only thing missing is the ability to mark emails as not/important. It does everything else already (except ability for other apps to send email via Gmail.app instead of Apple's Mail.app).

Agreed. It doesn't make sense to play foosball after eating a lot of sushi, the order should be reversed.

anyone use this new app? Is it worth it?
