"Maybe Jobs’s queasiness with thinking about legacy comes from the pancreatic-cancer scare he received, and eluded, a few years ago. Or perhaps it comes from another sort of brush with death—the Apple stock-option backdating scandal that embroiled him recently—which he also has managed to survive. Some of his friends say these close calls have mellowed him. "I see him around the neighborhood," says one. "He looks different than he did a few years ago. I think he may want to do something else."
Say what? "I think that Google is going to buy Apple," this person says. "It would be a victory for Apple; they’d get major-league partners, money, and engineers. And it would be a victory for Steve—a huge win that lets him leave the stage."

Wow, that is some speculation. What are your opinions?

I like them as partners, but one company?

    Rich.

They work well as partners, but there is no need for them to be one company. I think that they will work better at their areas of business if that is all that they are focused on instead of it being one large company that tries to do everything.

This is ridiculous. Apple would get big time partners? What about BMW, and Mercedes, and all record labels and movie partnerships? Those aren't big time? They would get more engineers? I'm sure Apple is doing just fine with applicants.

This is as dumb of speculation as that Ziff Davis article saying Leopard is copying Vista.

Legacy thinking is not a bad idea. If any company is so tied with it's CEO, then there is a potential disaster. I think Buffet and Berkshire Hathaway has to deal with the same thing.
But why not think of Apple taking over Google instead ;)

I dont even think Google could afford to buy Apple who currently have a market cap of $100bn

GK's track record isn't that impressive - and in this he's way off the mark. The comments made by readers are quite interesting though.

Bob Cringley wrote an interesting article about the difference between Gates and Jobs a few years back - he points out that Jobs has it pretty sweet.

Now you may not necessarily agree with Cringely, but when put that like why would SJ sell out?
