This is stupid. Plain stupid. YouTube has no potential to make any sort of money under their current business strategy. This is a dumb move on Google's part. YouTube uses more bandwidth on a day to day basis than any other site on the internet. Google is going to need to pay to keep that bandwidth up on a site making less money than it is spending.

This is absurd! What the hell is Google trying to do? Their business strategy seems to be "lets screw up as much as possible".

i'm with you. they just piaid 1.65 billion dollars for a name. anyone can set up a video site if they can afford the bandwith. the only thing that you tube has is its name recognition. i wonder how this name can be translated into 1 650 000 000 advertising dollars.

quote from another thread

I think this quote sums up YouTube potential:

"Finally, I can get my fill of useless video junk at one site."-Barkins

YouTube just signed deals with the top 3 major movie companies.

No potential?

Man, Google is not stupid to pay that amount of money just for name recognition.
There is a reason behind this move and you and me have no idea what's behind the future strategy or potential this is set to bring google and of course Apple in a hopefully possible partnership.

I don't like that Google is trying to take over the world, but I do like the idea of streaming YouTube videos to iTV!

You sure you want this stuff on iTV?

This is going to be one of the biggest tech blunders of the decade Im sure. I thought Google had smart people running it.

Youtube is in its Prime and has no where to go but down, and its going to go down hard like Napster. Unless Google's plan is to buy and then sell at a higher price later by bringing in more advertisers then I really dont understand what they were thinking.

Google Video was always supperior to Youtube, Youtube's players sucks. Its slow, obscenely tiny on high resolutions, 90% of the videos have out of sync audio, and you have to load the whole video before you can skip to the end. If Google wanted a Youtube all they had to do was let members upload any video at will regardless of copyright issues. Bang, instant Youtube without the 1 billion dollar price tag. The ONLY reason Google Video isnt nearly as popular is because they dont allow any sort of video that might have something thats illegal, so all you get there is homemade crap and 15second clips which has gotten boring to the public.

I just dont get it. Google has the power to be Youtube but then instead of changing the rules that are holding them back they go and buy another company? They put the rules in place to protect them from lawsuits, why the hell are they buying Youtube which probably has hundreds of lawsuits already in the works? Its not an issue of branding, Google could easily demolish Youtube's name by just doing a little pimping with search results and on the main page to let everyone know they have videos (but the problem is they never allow the videos that everyone searches for).

While making as much money as possible....

I think Google will do just fine with this investment. I also think YouTube has picked the most logical prospective partner. I can see why Viacom (or CBS) might have been interested in YouTube, but I couldn't figure why YouTube would bother with them.

Why rate this negatively, anyway? Because Google is strategically growing through a thoughtful use of its cash? Sheesh. (Maybe because we didn't buy the stock when we knew we should, and now it's up $8 on the day to $429?)

Somebody kick me again when the stock clears $1000.

To me, the average user who will buy an iTV when it comes out, it seems that this is good news.

Being able to possibly stream YouTube videos onto iTV and watch on my "big screen TV", would be completely awesome. I get bored from time to time and this would be something fun to pass the time, at the comfort of my own living room.

Then again, it could have nothing to do with Apple and iTV. :)

For Google stock to hit $1000 per share it needs at least $173 billions in investor money. Note that this is new money, and it has to come from somewhere. It will reach $303 Billions in Market Cap if it reaches $1000 per share which is greater than Microsoft or BP. I think it takes a lot to move a company with market value @ $130 billion. There is a lot of speculation going around, and it smells awfully familiar like that of 1999 and 2000.

Maybe my taste for video is different than others. I visted the YouTube site a few times and looked at several of the most popular viedeos and found them boring. There were a couple of funny ones but not a belly full. Having been there since.

At least Microsoft didn't buy YouTube. Then we would be seeing the error message "Internet Explorer 6 and Windows Media Player 10 are required to view this website", leaving Mac users high and dry.

does anyone know anything about youtube's history? How they started, who started it, where it was started, anything?

I like reading about businesses/companies that started up a little website then sold their company for over a billion dollars not long after.

how old is youtube?

hrmmmm.

Google aren't stupid either. They are certainly one of the biggest players in the industry at this time.

Here in Australia the Google office started with a couple of guys, just recently they advertised about 20 jobs, out of nowhere....

expanding much?

agree.

sites that need media player... *vomit*

This solves one of YouTube's biggest problems - how to pay the increasing costs of storage and bandwidth to keep up with demand while building up ad revenue stream to make a viable business out of hosting videos.

Have any of you given a thought to resolution? The very idea that people are going to watch youtube or google video (through iTV or any other appliance) on a TV is, well, gagging.

The quality of uTube in a window on a computer is appalling- it would be completely unwatchable full screen. To be honest, I donot even think the quality of the iTunes LOost episode is great- OK on a compoter windowed, but on my TV, blah.

UTube is great for blowing time at work, or watching the occasional strange or weird thing. But it too will pass, and be a novelty site in a year. They just cannot serve the quality we would want to watch for any length of time.

How can any one say that this is just another foolhearty and stupid move by Google? If there is one thing in the world that I know for fact is that whatever Google is doing, at this moment in time, is probably right. They are in the process of reshaping the modern world. And much more than any other company or individual can.

So even though they are still mostly self-serving and probably have plans to rule the world one nation-state at a time, I'm for them.

I agree. There are copyright issues, and YouTube has a lot of junk on it. But I am sure there is much more to this than we see or know. Google isnt stupid and obviously saw a good reason to buy this when they already have a competing product of their own.

Now, in 5 years, when Google denonates their first atomic weapon, Ill be scared.

Google provides the ads for YouTube... don't you think they know the potential of the site?

Also, people on here have commented how lame the homemade videos on YouTube are, but I love YouTube. If I want to see a clip of the daily show - YouTube. And, not the whole Daily Show or whatever news/entertainment program but the funniest or most informative or interesting 30 seconds to 5 minutes.

Love or hate YouTube, some of the shows have millions of views that would be a hit on network tv.

The time is right for Apple to embrace online video websites.

1. The CEO of Google is on Apple's board.
2. Google now owns YouTube, the #1 online video website
3. YouTube has major brand recognition, and is a hot topic in the media
4. Online video websites fill needs not served by any other product:
a) YouTube videos are the perfect kind of content for an iPod.
b) YouTube is a great medium for publishing clips.

I think iLife '07 should have serious YouTube integration. YouTube and iTunes could be hooked together in a way. A "Download in iTunes" button on a YouTube video page would actually open iTunes and download the video through the iTunes download manager, filing it automatically under "Movies".

In addition, Apple could add YouTube support to iWeb (that is, embedding videos in pages) and iMovie could add a YouTube publishing feature.

You left Apple making money out of that equation.

Google is better off waiting out the fad

YouTube offers homemade video that is amusing for a few time around but I quickly become bored. I'm a typical person in America, and if i'm bored of youtube after several go, it can't be worth much. Youtube has nothing unique that Microsoft, Yahoo, Google, CNN, Wired, myspace etc. can't offer.

My thoughts exactly! YouTube is nothing more than a website people go to when they get a link in an email. The video quality is ABSOLUTELY horrible, to the point that I can't even watch it. And it's all Flash, so you can't put it on your iPod or even download it.

Google bought it so know one else could. Plain and simple.
