it's Googles way of throwing a jab at Apple. This is not a Google ecosystem app, it a for IOS User for an iOS missing feature created by Apples #1 competitor. It's laughable at best that Google had to show up Apple by giving it's users a feature Apple will not provide as stock.

Did you miss this line?

Google says the information it learns from Motion Stillswill perhaps be used to introduce new capabilities into Google Photos in the future.

Yeah, Google did this to show Apple up.

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Live photos should of had the option of saving to Gif or video from the beginning. Not really sure why Google is doing this. But it is very cool.

My god can we have a thread with no apple bashing? Its pretty damn annoying at this point. Every damn thread is the same now.

So now apple should make every app themselves?
Can we just have some Apple software releases that don't make the front page of MacRumors because of problems, and don't require weekly beta releases, and don't require pulled updates, and don't remove features, and are not targeted to people with IQs less than 90.

Its gotten to a point where its about anything, not just the issues that are legit.

LOL....again....all you Apple bashers on a site dedicated to them and their products.....the choice is simple....go to Android or Windows. You all seem to think you are STUCK with an iPhone. Go see for yourselves if the grass is greener on the other side. Go get yourselves an HTC 10, nor a Nexus 6P, or an S7 and try it out for crying out loud. Sick of all these haters and complainers *all while complaining myself lol*

Why? The fact that I buy apple products, that I pay for them, and that I like most of them does not preclude the possibility of complaint. Actually, I can do whatever I want (respectfully).
Is it dumb that I can make Live Photos and Apple didn't give me the possibility to share them as GIF with the world? Yes. Is it the end of the world? No.
there's nothing wrong in pointing out that your kid has all A's but one F. You want that F to be an A.

WTF are you talking about. Of course Apple don't want people to turn Live Photos into something else. It's a no-brainer that Apple didn't made that app to all you no-brains.
Maybe Apple should also make an app for easier switching to Android.. People these days..

Another great feature introduced by Apple but made useable and widely available elsewhere. Soon we will have GIF based Live Photos by Google that everybody can view and share, and you will have Apple Live Photos you can only watch on iOS devices and and share with your Apple friends using iCloud sharing.

But there are so many issues that are legit, that Apple appears to be working very hard at earning every single piece of criticism they get, and I, for one, don't want to disappoint them.

Why? Because they need to wake up.

Thanks for taking us back to 1987, Google. 256 colors. Oh boy!

Also, isn't the GIF file format a licensed format? Is Google just choosing not to pay CompuServe for use of their technology? My guess is "yes", and the reason Apple didn't add a GIF option is because it's stupid technology from 1987.

Why not look it up instead of spreading misinformation? Just wondering.

Will this loop any photos from the Library? I sometimes shoot in burst mode on my mirrorless camera and then stitch the results into a GIF, but at the minute I'm relying on online GIF creation websites to do that. An app on my phone would be far more handy.

Edit: Nope - the app is only compatible with the iPhone 6s and SE. They need to make that clear on the App Store listing, the app literally has no function on any other device. It just comes up with a splash screen explaining that you cannot use the app. Pretty dumb.

Write a letter to the MR editors that you don't want that.

I stand corrected. Last time I was generating GIFs, it was under license only: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GIF#Unisys_and_LZW_patent_enforcement

I have not used GIFs since. It's pretty ridiculous that we still use them however since the quality is terrible and the compression ratio is poor. I think this is a neat "trick" but not something that Apple would be or should be interested in.

At least Apple could add export of Live Photos to video so people could share best or funny live moments on various services. At the same time it would be a free advertisement of the unique feature of iPhone.

Nice concept. But no, Google. You don't get access to my photos.

I blame Edward Snowden for this total FUD about Google (and online privacy in general) and privacy be it with big brother or advertising... I don't think they are as bad as people make them out to be. I myself went through a period of not using Google services but I realized that I have nothing to hide and while that maybe isn't enough reason for some people - it is for me. I trust Google and I think the stuff they offer is top notch (although I'm not a big fan of Android, much prefer the simplicity and stability of iOS).

I think Snowden did more harm than good about making people paranoid about this stuff for no good reason. It's silly really. If you have nothing to hide and you realize that what you gain is worth the little risks, then it's good. I know some will say "well I have nothing to hide but that doesn't mean I want to give it up", fine. But quit painting Google in a bad light. They are without a doubt the most powerful tech company in my opinion and as of late when Apple hasn't been doing many new cool things in a while, Google is continuously innovating and not just for their own OS but for ours too. But regardless of integrity or dignity or anything else, it comes down to the fact you should have nothing to hide (for big brother, and if you do then you deserve to get caught), and it depends how badly you want their services. IMO, it's worth the risk. And if you know how to tweak Google's settings on the my account page then that risk with advertisers getting it becomes lessened significantly.

I'm not saying Google is perfect or everyone should use it. But the fear and paranoia surrounding them is a bit much.

Unless we use the convenient app that Google just released, today. Which, once again, wouldn't exist without Apple inventing live photos and the entire App ecosystem in the first place. See, it works both ways.

Seriously, this is getting ridiculous. It's time for a break for MacRumors comments. The same thing happened with The Verge, flooded with overwhelmingly trollish comments, they solved it by closing comments for all posts for a while. Herd mentality...

So you can complain about people that complain, you can ask for censorship on a FREE service, but people that paid a company to provide a service through a business transaction can't have a say on such service? For real?
