For obvious reasons. We all know what google do.

...which was never an issue until Android came out, and their relationship with Apple became strained.

We've always known what Google does. We've only hated them for it since Steve Jobs declared thermonuclear war on them. It was around that time they became the Microsoft for the mobile generation, and people started bashing them for every little thing they do.

Admittedly, they have done some iffy stuff in the past. But the whole "Google knows everything about you, and sells it to the highest bidder" is alarmist nonsense at best.

So if you don't have a tethering plan, no soup for you?

Uhhhh... question:

Do you need a tethering plan for your earpiece? cuz uhhh this uses bluetooth too.

lol

Please make these illegal while driving. I get sick to stomach thinking about people driving and getting texts that flash at them in the exact spot you need to check before making a left turn into oncoming traffic. Shivers. Yes, I'm also a motorcyclist.

I agree, I wish the penalties were extremely high, like > $2k per offense with no chance to fight it. Current penalties do not act as deterrent.

I've disliked google for at least 10 years now. Long before Jobs said what he said. My hate for them has nothing to do with Apple. google has earnt their reputation a long time ago and has done nothing to change this.

No. Always need your day in court. Or the police can use it as unethical revenue raising.

I can't wait for this to fail in a spectacular way.

Why would you actually want something to fail?

Nobody wants to talk to someone who may or may not be paying more attention to text messages beamed onto his retina. Add in the possibility of archiving video of every conversation and the societal backlash will be brutal.

So you have no choice of who you associate with? Don't like it? Don't associate with them or simply ask them to please stop?

Also, I don't know how old you are but exactly the same hysterical reaction was displayed when mobile phones reached mainstream adoption in the early 90s... how'd that turn out?

A decade later when phones got cameras, people predicted hordes of perverts taking photos in change rooms and toilets... how'd that turn out?

This is nothing new, luddites have been predicting the downfall of society as we know it with each new advance in technology going back hundreds of years. It hasn't happened yet - it turns out that we adapt, both on the individual level and at the societal level.

Why did you hate Google in 2002/2003? Other than producing by far the most effective and efficient Search engine and making a tiny amount of money from AdWords, they really hadn't done anything of note by that point to inspire hate.

Of course, it's pretty trendy to hate them these days.

1. Google took over gmail. Yes gmail.com was originally the garfield email. I used that. And it was great. Once google muscled their way in and booted garfield from the domain they moved to e-garfield.com then the garfield email went out of existence.

2. The advertising, always annoying.
I used to use Altavista and msn search (MS) back in the day. When google became popular and all the rage I moved to that but now I've moved back to bing (MS). I tried to give google benefit of the doubt and see if it could improve itself. The search algorithms google has back in the day were pretty good. But of recent they are becoming a little "shut out the competition".

3. Google's products. Google seem to use the R&D for anything and hope something out of that is good. Not very wise ways to utilise R&D money. But it's google's loss. More targeted R&D would be better.

4. You can't do a full gmail email account delete (ie delete every email in it) from a client like mail or thunderbird. You have to use the web based client to do this. Very annoying. The main reason why gmail is now my spam only email account. I've moved to @me (as in Apple). I'm not saying Apple email is the beast out there. I'm just saying I like the @me ending. Short, to the point, easy for people to remember etc etc.

The only thing Google did was buy the domain name "gmail.com". The original owners chose to sell it, no one "muscled" their way in.

The software behind Google mail was completely developed in-house.

2. The advertising, always annoying.

Perhaps Google should offer all these services and not make any money whatsoever... in fact lose money?

With regards to you using Bing, they have ads too, and Microsoft can't even develop their own algorithm so they simply steal Google's results:

And yet they became a multinational, multi-billion dollar company...

Surely having to login to a web app to delete every email in your gmail can't be that much of an inconvenience? How often does that get done? The one time when you want to stop using your gmail account?

But you previously liked gmail.com domain when it was garfield mail?

Regardless, let me see If I have this correct. A decade ago you decided that you hated Google for the following reasons:

1. They bought a domain name from an owner who was willing to sell

2. They used ads to subsidise their free email service, which at the time had data allowances orders of magnitude greater than the competition, with vastly superior search and antispam capabilities

3. You didn't like the R and D areas Google chose to spend its money in (and at that time, it was GOOGLE'S money since it was a privately owned company)

4. To delete all your emails from their superior, free email service you were inconvenienced by having to open a webpage.

So for you, these reasons are enough to incite a hatred that has lasted a decade?

For obvious reasons. We all know what google do.

What is it that you think Google do exactly?

Google Glass now interests me more with this news. Although I generally am not a fan of Google products, Glass is intriguing. I'd like to give it a go when it's released so I'm hoping the rumours of it costing around £150 are true.

That's the reason for the LED that glows when its recording. So you know and can smack the person.
There is no such light. It's been suggested as a brain dead obvious thing they should add to the product, but the fact remains: IT'S NOT THERE. There is no way to know if someone is recording.

as someone said, i too hope that wearing it would have social repercussions. i dont want to be around people who record everything, without me knowing of it. i hope that google add - or be forced to add by court order - an led that notes the person wearing it is recording.

I'm looking forward to such glasses become mainstream. The potential is huge - for example - but not limited to -
* cycling or driving with a HUD that contains map directions.
* being able to read SMS / emails ( not while driving or cycling of course).
* working through a cooking receipe,
* walking past a resturant and have their menu available

You may think 'what's the point' but glasses will become smart whether you like them or not and Smart Glasses are a future mainstream consumer product.. Battery life needs sorting out of course.

In the longer term future, it won't be smart glasses, it will be Smart Contact Lenses.

You've never heard of "they made an offer you couldn't refuse?"

Perhaps Google should offer all these services and not make any money whatsoever... in fact lose money?
No. Just do it a little more ethically minded.

I am aware of this and it's very wrong. Just like samesung stealing from Apple etc etc. Would be a perfect world if no one stole from anyone else. But people do every day.

I like to keep a clean email account. And remove every old email I don't want there. My personal choice I agree, I don't have to. But Google makes us take that extra step to do so.

But you previously liked gmail.com domain when it was garfield mail?
gmail the domain doesn't bother me. It's just a domain. It's what is on the domain that matters more.

Regardless, let me see If I have this correct. A decade ago you decided that you hated Google for the following reasons:

As I said above "an offer they couldn't refuse". Not fair but that's life.

2. They used ads to subsidise their free email service, which at the time had data allowances orders of magnitude greater than the competition, with vastly superior search and antispam capabilities
I wouldn't say anti spam. I get loads of spam in my google email. I always have. And only some of it is directed into the spam folder. And their search used to be superior. Now their algorithms are coming into question.
https://www.macrumors.com/2013/04/02/are-itunes-links-being-downranked-by-google/
And google are doing it to all of their competition not just Apple.

3. You didn't like the R and D areas Google chose to spend its money in (and at that time, it was GOOGLE'S money since it was a privately owned company)
No. I don't like the methods in which they use their R&D. Not what the specific things they use R&D on. I don't like the fact they are go random and see what sticks. The need more focus with their R&D in my opinion.

4. To delete all your emails from their superior, free email service you were inconvenienced by having to open a webpage.
google email being superior is only in your opinion. google email does not work for me. But others love it. ANd that's fine, we each have our own favourite email.

So for you, these reasons are enough to incite a hatred that has lasted a decade?
Yes.

What is it that you think Google do exactly?
Not think. We both know what google do. They are a business out to make money, like any other business. I just don't like the way in which they conduct their business, that's all.

You've never heard of "they made an offer you couldn't refuse?"

How exactly did they do this? Are you suggesting there was legal action (or threats of) involved?

----------

Obviously. Spy glasses are meant to be used by real spies only, would you believe that?

Haha. Sorry, I thought you were implying something deeper about Google as a company as that seems to be the direction this thread has taken! (as usual on this forum) :D

The distrust won't last....

I bet people said the same thing about cameras in stores, buses, etc. Over 10 years ago, if someone proposed that people would post a list of their friends in a public place, many people would say he was crazy.

You might hate it, but your children might not even care. The mugger would also hate it when he sees the 'red LED' blinking on the old guys glasses. (Not saying that you are a bad guy)

The question is, "When there are cameras all over the place, who gets to see what is recored? The just government, everyone, or something in between...

No, people didn't say the same thing about cameras in buses, ect. For one, they don't record intimate conversations, and they're in public places Google's glass is anywhere the dork who's wearing goes, and it can record the most intimate facial expressions and conversations. This is whole new ballgame.

----------

That's the reason for the LED that glows when its recording. So you know and can smack the person.

Then again as soon as this goes public someone will root the software to turn off the light.

Easily patched. A jailbreak will disable the LED.
