I continue to push everyone I can from iMessage and WhatsApp to Google Hangouts. It's the only messaging platform I've seen with decent access on iOS, Android, PC and Mac. Being able to actually have cross platform video calls, instant messaging and picture messages and have them pop up everywhere I am is just brilliant.

It seems with every passing month that Apple's unwillingness to offer services to customers outside of their hardware ecosystem just puts them further and further into the outdated category. People want their data, and they want it EVERYWHERE.

wonder if they fixed the Google Voice integration? there are times when it won't receive an incoming call, so I use both talkatone and google hangouts for google voice. (hangouts for outgoing, and talkatone for incoming as it always receives calls).

:D

So I tested the ability to receive calls from GoogleVoice via hangouts on my iOS device and the app seems to work more reliably. so far no dropped / ignored calls.

Push? That's all I know anyone uses...?

All my iPhone friends I imessage, but they all have google accounts as well. And of course Hangout to my Android using friends.

/agree
I love Hangouts on my corp issued Windows box like the Hangouts applet. It would be great for Apple to at least put iMessages on iCloud.com, ideally they'd integrate as a breakout from the iCloud Control Panel for Windows.

The new design looks nice. However it does not display my avatar on top, I can only see the blue generic face. Weirdly enough, when I go to my G+ profile in-app my face is there.

If anyone should be taking note it's Facebook.

Google+ and Google Hangouts look a lot better than the Facebook app and Facebook Messenger.
What's wrong with Favebook Messenger design? Seems to be fairly similar to what Hangouts looks like now--simple and straightforward.

Actually, you're right, Facebook Messenger is better than it was in the beginning. It got cleaned up a lot in the 3.0 update.

This is why I don't use ANY Apple apps. Everything I use is cross platform.

iCloud? Nope. Dropbox.
iTunes Match. Nope. Spotify.
Maps? Nope. Google Maps.
Notes? Nope. Evernote.
Reminders? Nope. Wunderlist.
Podcasts? Nope. PocketCasts.

I refused to let Apple trap me in their walled garden.

I think Apple took flat literally. Im sorry but the right looks more attractive than the left

*to you. I'm not a fan of stock Android's UI as I find the colors, fonts, and icons used to be typically hideous together, and I despise its top-down approach, especially on larger devices. You're not a be-all, end-all, objective source on UI design because such a source does not exist. Don't pretend any exist. Design is subjective.

Are there elements of iOS's design that could be improved? Of course. iOS 7.1 (debatably) shows Apple's willing to make tweaks to make iOS 7+'s design easier to understand and use. It's still not perfect (that'll never happen on any mobile device), but it's a set of improvements.

I had this issue too. I logged out then logged back in and it fixed itself. You can also try changing your profile pic and cancel.

Awesome Google now update your very old Google Voice app or integrate it better in to hangouts

UI not UX. UX will never be the same because the OS differ in general UX.

I'm sorry but neither apply in this case as Google's Android apps share very little to this iOS app other than maybe the font.

I'm guessing that will happen in May or soon after. That is when Google is killing off 3rd party VOIP. It is speculated that complete GV integration with Hangouts will happen around that time (the ability to send SMS, etc).

Well, it's hard for any UI to look bad when the entire screen is dominated by 2 album art covers... although I'm seeing 3 on my HTC.

Your screenshot also conveniently (or inconveniently) captured the iTunes app with a mostly white billboard, along with a list instead of album art which gives the screen less "depth" and makes it less interesting to look at.

A static picture also fails to capture one of iOS 7's coolest features, the blur effect, which not only communicates depth and layers of the UI, but also allows the look & feel to subtly shift depending on the content, giving it a mesmerizing visual fluidity that's unique to iOS.

Screenshots also fail to capture Google's UI shortcomings, such as the label in the upper left not being hot, the color coding of different sections in Play that hurts the UI more than it helps, and just the overall navigation that requires extra taps and swipes to move around the interface vs iTunes because of poor use of screen real estate. Oh, and that Halloween color scheme gets tired real fast.

The iTunes app clearly communicates more information, and IMO has a cleaner, more straightforward, intuitive and beautiful interface. I'm looking at them side by side and browsing both stores as I write this, BTW.
