Hangouts, Google's dedicated messaging app, was today updated with support for the iPhone X. With the update, the Hangouts app is able to take advantage of the full display of the iPhone X, without black bars at the top and the bottom.

With the iPhone X update for Hangouts, all of Google's major iOS apps now offer support for Apple's new flagship device. Google previously introduced iPhone X updates for Docs, Sheets, Slides, Gmail, and Google Maps.

According to Google's release notes for today's Hangouts update, the only new feature is iPhone X optimization.

Google Hangouts can be downloaded from the App Store for free. [Direct Link]

I tried to get people I know to use Hangouts years ago. It's just too much of a hassle for typical iPhone users apparently. Unfortunately most everyone I know uses iPhone, which traps me in iPhone too - green bubbles are still shunned in the circles I run in.

Sigh.

Agreed, same for me. I buy lots of digital codes so really that's the only reason I use this application. My friends/family won't touch it.

I got my entire family to use it - including friends. Then... Google said they were going to phase it out for Allo and Duo. Then they decided to keep it around for just business users... and ... I guess now it hangs around anyway. My family / friends moved to WhatsApp ... I despise it so much - always draining iPhone battery and iPhone has to be connected to Wifi and ... ugh it is so laggy and slow. I really miss Hangouts and wish that google hadn't ... abandoned it ... or planned to then didn't .... or .... whatever they're doing with their many messengers.

Perfect! I use this all the time, I'm glad they are still keeping it. Yesterday I was going to figure out how to use their other apps, but I'm glad this got the update I was waiting for!

Can also be useful for Google Voice integration.

Hopefully they'll keep it around if only for Google Voice integration, although other parts of it all are useful as well (on the level of just being the good old Google Chat basically, and a decent alternative to FaceTime/Skype which can even be better with support for multiple users and essentially meetings/conference calls).

I didn't even know that there were plans to get rid of it. It's good to hear that it's still supported.

Now if only they'll fix the other bugs, for example it'd be nice if it would actually open Safari when you tell it to open Safari.

Anyone else think the update isn't actually quite for iPhone X as it only adds a dark green fill to the top (which is different than the green right below it and not seamless) and white fill to the bottom? Am I missing something?

What do you consider “all of Google's major iOS apps”? There are still a few that don’t support iPhone X:
  • Google Inbox
  • Google Voice
  • Google Play Books
  • Google Play Newsstand
  • Chrome Remote Desktop
Google Voice has had a handful of updates in the last couple of months or so, is it still not updated to support iPhone X?

Inbox still hasn't been updated :(
I haven't used the Gmail app in so long and can't be bothered to download it. Did they change Gmail to be more like Inbox?
Hopefully they'll update Inbox soon. But at the same time thankfully they've kept Gmail separate from it to still provide the more typical email experience for those who want it.

I didn't hear they were abandoning it, it's just they had so many other newer apps that did the same thing I thought they were ditching it.

Google hangouts is the best messenger app on iOS next to iMessage.

The fact that you get an actual phone number to send texts and make phone calls from just makes it a level above the rest.
[doublepost=1513729171][/doublepost]It might be because I’m on the public beta but I have the latest hangouts app update and it still isn’t updated for the x

Tried doing the same it was too late to the party as most people jumped on and stayed on the whatsapp train for an alternative to imessage.

Awesome. Hangouts is the best multi platform messenger.

Yup it's too bad people are unwilling to use it.

I have version 20.1 installed and the App Store doesn't show any updates available, despite listing the latest version as 21.0. I suspect that it'll fix itself over the next day or so.

Having said that, I'm not on an X.

In the app store log it says the update is specifically for the X. #SHRUG

Hangouts is horrible. Furthermore, Google half-asses things so they give up on projects midway through. Right now they have 5 or so different communication apps with no direction. Bottom line, you care more about Hangouts than Google does.

Well, Gmail has certainly been around for quite a while at this point, and works fairly well for many. While there are plenty of things that are given up on, there are also various ones that have been around for some time and are still supported and work fairly well (although many can certainly still be better, as is usually the case for most things).

Annnnnnd of course Hangouts on iOS is still dense as to the idea that Photos and Avatars are reversed-colored on iPhones with Smart Inverse operating.

Neeeeext....

Hangouts is horrible.

What exactly is horrible about it? The user experience? The design? Functionality?

I’ve heard from some die hard android users that hangouts is better on iOS, and most google apps, than it is on android.
