Does it still offer no way of going "offline," or signing off without really logging out of the entire app?

I'd love this app, but I don't want to be on gchat 24/7.

Indeed. It really needs a "remember me" option because it's a pain to have to enter my email/password on every launch. I submitted feedback on that ages ago but it hasn't made it into the latest update.

I still don't see a way to determine if people are online or not? I used to look at the pic in a conversation window which would either be greyed out or not, but this is really not anymore different than Imessage.

No to mention that the photo gets grey when you switch/close the app.

That's great, but I need a desktop app. How am I supposed to use it on my Mac?

By using Chrome and then adding its extension.

You can sign in to multiple accounts, so it would appear that you can use the app for multiple Google Voice phone numbers.

However, even after turning ON "Incoming phone calls" in the particular account I didn't get any notification that I was receiving a call when I tested it.

One more step towards killing the phone system. I like it. I hope Apple makes something like Facetime except for voice only (or iMessage for voice, whatever). EDIT: They added it to iOS 7.

Can someone give me one fair reason to put google back into a new ipad I got because the tablet I tried last Xmas with quite reasonable specs like the nvidia t30s for the time, was so trashy that even a Nokia Lumia I got for the total 6 months the tablet was between me and the service was thriving in comparison?

Even if gapps are much better for iOS than their laggy trashy stack they call an operating system, with 6% effectiveness against native coding because they use JAVA VM to copycat the iOS layers like micro$oft with silverlight and wp7+8 shouldn't I be called a dumb idiot to install them again?

I get ballietic the moment I see adcoiches and all the google gimmicks for serving damn ads in every place of my canvas trashing my eyes with neon-faux badly designed intrusive ads they purposefully make them look like this?

Forgive my bitterness but google has become so greedy that they destroyed their tablet share with the fragmentation and they'll realize it. Google apps shouldn't be in the AppStore but I understand their being there because of the accounts many users have. I have completely written google off, even as search engine. And I'm not the only one.

You don't even browse youtube? Or have a gmail account?

Use chrome to login to hangouts

----------

I updated my hangout apps and can dial out no problem, but there are a few issues...

1) can't paste a phone number to dial out.
2) notifications don't appear to work on an incoming phone call
3) doesn't seem to be aware that a call is coming in while the app is open.

Have resorted to talkatone once again.

This is the exact reason I don't use it. Why can't I log out when I want to log out and log back in when I want to log in without having to re-set up the entire app? Google wants us to replace iMessage with gChat/Hangouts, but gChat has a fundamentally different purpose for me.

----------

Can't you simply close the app?

No. Closing the app keeps you logged in.

FaceTime Audio New iOS 7 Feature

Oh, didn't know that. Yes!

----------

You obviously haven't updated to iOS 7 or haven't really explored it too well ;)

I haven't explored it. Not enough of my friends use FaceTime.

----------

What I really want is for this to work in iChat. I'm not going on Google+, Gmail, whatever in Safari to do an audio chat.

Just use it without being logged in if you care that much. I'm so glad I got an account before Google+ came into existence. On YouTube, it asks me all the time to make a G+ account - NOPE!

You can setup iChat (now Messages) to use the XMPP implementation of Google Talk for IM.

Sadly, Google seems to be going away from open chat standards and is creating another competing standard with Google+. *sigh*

I just downloaded it and logged in and I don't see a dialer anywhere. Am I missing something?

EDIT: Looks like the app store gave let me download an old version. Weird.

Vonage App Better

I'm on the Tmobile $30/month plan.

Vonage App to call out is still better than Google Voice in terms of phone quality. The key advantage about the Vonage App is it "mimics" your cell phone number so people think you are dialing from your cell phone. The key disadvantage is that it can't accept incoming calls.

Would tell people to try both and see which one works best. I'm going to try and integrate Google Voice because of the call back mechanism, but for now I'm pretty happy with Vonage.

Whoa... wait a minute. WTF Google?

I have been waiting for Google voice integration to make calls on my Android Tablet and still no go? But, iOS gets that feature?

Okay then, buying the new iPad's when they come out.

Is that what you intended Google?

Same here. Able to dial out. Not receiving calls. Checked all settings.

Also, If I take my iPhone abroad, will I be able to dial-out/receive calls on Hangout?

Don't do that. This update is just the precursor to the MAJOR Hangouts update that will appear in Kit Kat this week. Hangouts is replacing the Messaging app and will turn into a service more similar to iMessage.

Someone call Google and let them know what a "Retina Display" is, and that they've been around for almost 4 years.

Seriously? You know Android will get a much better implementation (since it can integrate with the OS) when they release it in the next week or two.
