They earned that reputation with their privacy abuses of consumers. The trust is gone. Whether this is "good" or not itself isnt relevant to a lot of people as there are many competitors in this space with good track records like yubikey.

They could have gone with Yubico and identified with a proven vendor of authentication products. They market a wide variety of products for many different purposes INCLUDING the Apple iDevices, but they chose Google? Even for me, that doesn't make a heck of a lot of sense. Google does a hell of a lot to violate their customers security and beat down people in China and elsewhere. Google would be one of the last companies I'd think of as appropriate to try to support Apple's security initiatives. That would be like choosing Facebook for support on a 'truth in advertising' initiative.

Yeah, bad call... Looks bad, smells bad...

The U2F standards were initially crafted by both Google and Yubico. Not to mention, these devices look extremely similar to the existing product line of Yubico. I suspect these are actually produced by Yubico in the first place.

Yes the Titan keys look similar... I've had the Feitian and Yubico keys for quite a while and obtained new Titan ones at no charge.

Nearly a year ago Google sent out the following to Advance Protection Program users:

We’ve become aware of an issue affecting the Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) Feitian Security Key you are using with your Google Account. This issue does not affect the USB/NFC version of the Feitian security key.

Recommended actions
While it is still safer to use the affected Feitian Security Key instead of no key at all, you should do the following for your security:

  • Sign in and unpair. After you’ve used your key to sign in to your Google Account on your mobile device, immediately unpair it. Here are instructions for iOS and Android.
  • Replace your current security key for free by visiting google.com/replacemykey. (Please note: Only keys purchased on Google Store are eligible for replacement through Google Store).
Important
If you don’t replace your key and use a device with iOS 12.3 or higher, you could be locked out of your Google Account. Follow these instructions if you get locked out of your account.

With the Advanced Protection Program, we are always working to ensure that you receive Google’s strongest security. If you need additional support, please contact us at advancedprotection@google.com.

Sincerely,

The Advanced Protection Program Team
