I honestly thought it was a joke!

So, it's gonna be Alphabet Maps, www.alphabet.com, Alphabet Search...and so on...

    Really, Google, I mean, Alphabet?

Yeah must admit I thought it was a spoof too .... but nope - they're calling themselves Alphabet ? I mean all their money and the best new name they could pick was Alphabet ?? Would have loved to have been a fly on the wall at the creative board on that one..

    Creative board / focus meeting.

"So like we have to change our name. We want something dynamic and visionary. Suggestions?"

"Does it have to be a real world or use real letters?"

"Yes - something from the Alphabet would be better than €#$%@$#!"

    "So how about Alphabet?"

    "Genius ...."

Can we conclude that this is just a "taxes" gameplay? Take everything that doesn't make money and is useless from Google, and newer ideas that might suffer with the Google branding (people are more and more weary of big G), so Google can report "higher" profits?

I say that because with FB eating them on Android, Apple locking the high end users and shutting Google from iOS, even their ads in iOS 9, Google will take a nice spanking. Dropping profits (iOS is much more valuable than Android, for Google) could set some big alarms.

It's just a farce, nothing more.

Alphabet! What a novel idea! Here's an idea for their company motto/slogan:

The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog.

They do have Android L and Android M, so there's that. The stock is up more than 6% after hours, so there's that too. Who knows how it will be perceived in the long-run?

Verge helps make more sense of it. Google is still Google, they just created a parent company called alphabet that'll oversee Google and so much more:

    http://www.theverge.com/2015/8/10/9128123/alphabet-subsidiaries-google-fiber-nest

    • Alphabet (the main company)
    • B (possibly Boston Dynamics, but whether it's remaining under Google is unclear at this point)
    • Calico (focused on longevity)
    • Capital (investment)
    • D
    • E
    • Fiber
    • Google (now led by Sundar Pichai and includes search, ads, maps, apps, YouTube, and Android)
    • Hooli
    • I
    • J
    • K
    • Life Sciences ("that works on the glucose-sensing contact lens")
    • M
    • Nest
    • O
    • P
    • Q
    • R
    • S
    • T
    • U
    • Ventures (investment)
    • W
    • X lab ("which incubates new efforts like Wing, our drone delivery effort")
    • Y
    • Z

    A lot to digest...

"We liked the name Alphabet because it means a collection of letters that represent language, one of humanity’s most important innovations, and is the core of how we index with Google search! We also like that it means alpha-bet (Alpha is investment return above benchmark), which we strive for!"

Why? It's not like Google doesn't have some double Irish sandwich as well.. Besides, those exist so Apple and Google are only taxed where they sell the products, and avoid getting double taxed and so on.

Alphabet is nothing more than taking all the dead weight out of Google, so their profits don't start dropping/dropping that much, while "hiding"/"separating" the other "companies".

I get it, its April 1st. hehehehe, I'm not falling for this... Oh wait, its August.

I really don't get them moving away from the google brand. That's well established and using a name like alphabet which is very generic and may be difficult to brand products with that name, or protect it, i.e., they will have a difficult time suing companies with the word alphabet in their names.

Couldn't they re-organize like a conglomerate as the article states and keep the google name?

Based on what I've read, my understanding is that Google will continue being Google (with a new ceo), and alphabet is just a parent company that can now expand to other things without affecting google's core businesses and properties (Gmail, maps, android etc). This means alphabet is able to experiment more and tackle other new and innovative projects; projects that Google X division (their experimental division) was previously trying to start up.

I think this will ultimately prove to be a good idea, even if it is strange sounding currently. It ironically let's Google continue to be Google, while alphabet can stray with new ideas and projects (virtual reality, driverless cars, fiber, etc).

    That's my understanding.

I think the idea behind the action is sound, but I do question the use of alphabet as the name of the parent company.

This makes a ton of sense. This way, Google's brand will not be spread too thin.

And I'm sure whenever apple does corporate restructuring it is totally legitimate and sound. Any investor worth their salt can see what Google is doing.

I believe the end goal is for them to have some company for each letter of the alphabet. Like what they have been doing for Android releases.

I think you might be overthinking it a bit. I'm sure corporate and branding specialists looked at their array of product and came up with a sort of "Alphabet soup" analogy. I'm positive Alphabet will not go out of its way to have one company for each letter.

As far as the Apple comment, Apple has no reason to restructure like Google has. Apple has a better understanding of where it stands.

So you agree with him in thinking this is a some facade (that the market seems to be bullish on at the moment)? Interesting how you can be positive about such a thing regarding the letters

I'm sure apple will restructure again at some point in the future, like every tech company and indeed themselves in the past and as usual their choices will be flawless and sound.

The verge article seems to think that alphabet is named so as to have a project for each letter.

Check out that list and article from verge. I don't find it hard to believe.

There are already two C's, so they obviously don't take it that seriously.
