As expected, Google today announced its new Music Beta service, offering users the ability to upload their music libraries to Google's servers for cloud-based hosting that allows users to access content from any device. The offering competes against Amazon's Cloud Drive and Cloud Player services, as well as Apple's expected MobileMe revamp.

Music Beta is currently available via invitation to U.S. users and will allow users to upload up to 20,000 songs using software for Mac or Windows. The service then offers a web-based interface and initial app support for Android devices. The service is free while in beta, and Google has yet to announce pricing for when the service exits beta.

Like Amazon's cloud-based system, Google has yet to achieve the cooperation of major music labels, forcing the company to rely on a "passive" system in which users are responsible for uploading their own content. Google had been working to reach agreements with record labels to roll out a more robust service, but those talks had stalled with the two sides at an impasse. With Apple reportedly having its own service ready to go and finalizing deals with record labels, Google has apparently shifted gears to more quickly launch the scaled back service without label support.

It's BETA, and it's only FREE during the BETA period. We shall see...

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_3_3 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/533.17.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.0.2 Mobile/8J2 Safari/6533.18.5)

Nice. But I'm not in US

I would say 'W00T More options = More competition = More creativity'. In this case its a 'BOO - US ONLY!'.

At least we get Spotify...better than iTunes, Amazon Cloud and Google Cloud put together ;)

It will remain in BETA till someone else hits a home run, then Google will copy it or buy it if they can't copy it.

I think Apple's service will be much more polished with having record label support. Wished WWDC was here already.

This makes me wonder if Google is going to be forced to be responsible for checking people's music collections on behalf of the RIAA, CRIA, etc. Not too much of a stretch to have a database of pirated music audio prints for comparison.

I think this is a postive, and hope Apple does something similar soon, but at the moment you'd have to have your head examined to try out this Google thing. They music companies do not like it and are not cooperating with Google. Great, so I just upload all my music and then what, get sued by the music companies?

I would prefer this method, actually. I would rather upload selected playlists to a cloud (especially up to 20,000 songs!) and listen to them anywhere with connection to the interwebs than rely on the service having song from a record label.

C'mon now, really? Are you afraid to wake up in the morning too? Why would this be any different than uploading your music to dropbox or amazon?

Good thing is that google products are beta for many many years labeled 'beta' - even when they are better than anything else on the market (Gmail was beta for ever .... and even though it lost beta, it is still free)

So I will have many years to enjoy it free.

Also: when it is good service, I'm willing to pay for it. Don't know why so many think they should get everything for free (I'm also find with ads on the web interface if it makes it free)

Hey!! it's "generic"!

Doesn't anybody think that "music" is a little be "generic" for a service all about...music? :D

Today feels like War on Apple day:

1) Microsoft buys Skype, poised to set up a Facetime competitor across Windows devices and Xbox.
2) Google announces a flurry of Android related developments that challenge iOS, iTunes, etc.
3) YouTube begins its assault on iTunes by announcing movie rentals.

If nothing else, maybe this will finally force Apple to rewrite (or rethink) iTunes so that it stops sucking. I'm also wondering how much longer Apple thinks it can sit out the TV market before it's too late. At the very least, it needs to sign up some partners to carry Apple TV as an OS. And that means it probably needs to have its own little "Ice Cream Sandwich" moment where it streamlines iOS across Apple TV, iPhone, iPad, and Lion.

Google wants Android to be compatible with literally every object that plugs into a socket. Apple should want the same.
