I switch between ChatGPT and Gemini. I've been using a web app for Gemini. So getting something native is finally awesome.

I'm actually looking forward to WWDC this year because I think that finally we'll be getting some of the Apple intelligence features we were promised a couple of years ago. At this point in time I can't imagine using a computer without one of these AI apps. They save me a ton of time each day.
Not awesome at all when you see how it changes your settings.

I'm hesitant to load this up locally until I hear whether it's slurping up local data for training. Like if you inadvertently give it access to Documents, can it pull in other files and train on them.
Yep, I have the same concerns. That’s why I would like macOS to be a bit more restrictive and safe with the way access to files is managed.

Hmmm, I have had a Mac app (universal) for quite a while now, guess I should check this one out.

Weird, the old one I had was called Google Gemini, this new one just plain Gemini. More colorful icon too.

Hmmm, I see it added a launch item (GeminiAppLauncher) not sure I want that always running, not knowing exactly what it is for.... oh wait, ask Gemini. Well, let's see if it becomes an annoyance.

Not for general training. Just to profile you better. As an example, getting access to your calendar through monitoring your entire screen makes you so much more interesting. Thanks to the insights from you doctor appointments it‘s now much clearer what ads should be thrown at you on every second web site you visit.

In the news:
Google’s AI Overviews search results tells millions of lies per hour.
10% of its answers are incorrect.

Have fun everyone!

Not sure about local data, but I downloaded the app and it's preset to open on login, with no option to disable that in the app settings or even deleting launch agents/daemons. They've made the app launcher the login item, so the only option is to delete the app as far as I can tell. Very dodgy but hardly surprising coming from Google.

Downloaded it and deleted it 30 minutes later when I found it automatically installs a setting to open automatically as a log in item. Deleting it in system settings does not solve the issue. It automatically returns it to the auto login setting. It takes control of the setting. Invasion of my privacy and control over my own machine. I've returned to the web app version. Plus, it makes my focus return to ChatGPT as the preferable AI service.

Thanks for this. I literally had the .dmg downloaded, but deleted it after reading this.

Is the web app version (which could be used as a PWA) giving the same results as the Mac app?

I hate apps that automatically add themselves to startup login items without asking permission to the user and without a proper opt-out in app's settings.
This app add two items: one under "Open at login" (the main app) and another under "background" (the auto-updater).
Manually removed both.
