lets say you get a map from point a to b, and you get in the car to drive it. since you were using edge to get the map, what happens if you lose edge connection, does it lose the turn by turn directions, or does it store them when you initially get the directions

I used Google maps a lot this past weekend and pretty sure they are cached in there.

I just did a test.

I mapped a route, brought it up and then turned on Airplane mode. When I went back to Google Maps, it tells me I have to turn off Airplane mode to access data.

I just hit cancel, and it stayed in Airplane mode and I was able to access the turn-by-turn directions, so it does cache it.

What happens if you're not in Airplane mode, but out of EDGE and WiFi contact? Does the browser ever time out and show a "can't access the page" error, or does it just alert you and stay on the page? (This being very desirable handheld behavior, not to drop a displayed page.)

Thanks!

I am pretty sure if you have GSM service you have at least GPRS if not EDGE access. If that isn't the case then I dunno. But if it is, chances are you should put your phone in Airplane Mode just to save the battery.
