I rarely touch Apple Maps anymore and Waze is my default for CarPlay. I just wish Google would let incidents be on the map without having to have navigation running, or even let incidents on Waze and Google sync.

As long as Apple doesn’t have a thriving community to fix maps errors and report road works and accidents, it’s never going to match Google Maps. At least not in Europe.

I have successfully changed an item in Google Maps (Valley of the Rogue State Park, Oregon) and was delighted that Google gave me “points” as a helper of sorts. Apple Maps was already correct, so there is that.

No thank you. I try to install as few apps as possible.
Every new AI “feature” I read about makes my eyes glaze over. I’m really sick of the AI bubble right now.
I, for the first time in my life, just started using AI in the form of Claude. With upcoming WCAG federal rules that require government websites to adhere to accessibility rules (plain language, proper headers, descriptive links, etc), Claude is saving my sanity. I will also use it to clean up our Annual Report as that will be online and will require the same plain language, etc. I try not to overuse it, but it is definitely a tool that I require. Best $200 I’ve ever spent (of my own money 🙄).

I don't know if it's still around, but my brother posted some photos of the college library where he was attending, and wrote a little synopsis about. It became viewed enough that they made him a "local guide", and sent him a pair of Google Maps socks!

They invited him to a summit, too, but he didn't care enough to go to consider going.

Google says that the app will have a new spatial understanding of the route that it's providing
It would be interesting if a mapping app could use the iPhone's cameras, or the output of a dash cam, to see the real world in front of the car, in real time while driving, and incorporate that into what it's showing the user onscreen.

What are Google Maps socks?? Sound like they help you walk the final distance to your destination.

when I read about those new "features" I do miss the old days where you had a printed map and maybe some travel guide (book) and then explore on your own ...
Not me. I do like just exploring. I like "getting lost" a little and discover interesting places. But I don't need any map for that. And when I finally get truly lost it's nice to have my phone to bail me out. I've been a map geek since I was eight and discovered gas stations had free maps (way way way back when). But now I like the tech.

Knowing Google, it will be automatically opt-in and is a total PITA to look for how to turn this turd off. 🙁

Still insane to me that despite all of these AI features, it still doesn't tap into my calendar and offer to take me to my next appointment like Apple Maps or Waze.

I'll have to try out the immersive navigation, but at first look it feels like the clutter of all the buildings and such could be too much when you're trying to just quickly glance at the map while driving.

Apple Maps 3D navigation with lane guidance is so so good. Gonna be hard to match. The only issue is lane guidance data needs to be better, especially after never ending construction changes.
Be the change you want to see. Apple Maps makes it easy to report changes and they approve them (and add them) much quicker than Google does. I’ve done a bunch and Apple always approves them and adds them first, sometimes weeks ahead. Google took a few months one time for me.

I've tried multiple times to report issues on apple maps here in the UK and they either got ignored or rejected, eventually I just gave up. The last time I reported something on Google maps (an incorrect speed limit) it was approved within the hour.

while probably true, I will say that Apple Maps performed way better than Google Maps when I was in Italy a couple of years ago. And this included driving from Slovenia all the way around the boot and into Naples, with lots of small stops along the way. So I guess your mileage may vary.
