CarPlay Google Maps doesn't work with wireless carplay

This is a very recent issue, perhaps since a month ago: When using Google Maps, the whole carplay interface slows to a snails pace. The display is lagging several minutes (but the audio prompts are up-to-date); and it's not just Google Maps, the reaction to any touch is totally lagging. It's like the real-time streaming from Google Maps totally overwhelms the wireless link.

I have no issue when using Apple Maps.

Anyone else with this issue? I don't see a solution, except not using Google Maps.

I've not seen that... my primary map software in CarPlay is Waze... I do use Apple Maps and Google maps from time to time... I've never experienced this.

I did a Google search, and it seems many people have this issue after a recent Google Maps update. Someone downgraded to an earlier version and the problem went away. So, it seems a Google Maps issue. But not everybody has the issue — not sure how widespread it is.
