The Google Maps app for CarPlay could soon include support for Gemini, based on code that MacRumors found in the Google Maps app.

Gemini integration would allow CarPlay users to get detailed directions and information from Gemini. Strings in the app suggest users will be able to tell Gemini to navigate to a specific location after agreeing to new Terms of Service in the iPhone version of the Google Maps app.

The Google Maps app already supports Gemini on iPhone, but Gemini is not available for use in Google Maps on CarPlay. Gemini in Google Maps adds an "Ask Maps" feature that can answer complex, real-world questions about locations and destinations.

On the iPhone, users can navigate to a location and then say Hey Google or tap the Gemini icon to converse with Gemini in the Google Maps app.

Apple started allowing third-party voice-based conversational apps to interface with CarPlay in iOS 26.4, which is likely why Google is now able to add Gemini to the Google Maps app for CarPlay.

Gemini integration is not yet live in the Google Maps CarPlay app, but since the framework is in the app, it could be rolling out soon. ChatGPT, Grok, and Perplexity are already available on CarPlay.

Apple Maps doesn’t stand a chance. It’s a such an unfortunate situation that even availability of turn-by-turn navigation is lacking in a number of countries globally, when Google Maps has this basic since its inception. Personally I LOVE Apple Maps, but I’m forced to use Google Maps because Apple Maps lacks turn-by-turn navigation where I live (in Bahrain) or even a bigger market like Saudi Arabia. Both markets have very high iOS market shares too! 🙁

As much as i am fan of the AI apps, they still need work, for example I asked how many EPISODES In the new season of the food that built america and it said 10 for season 6 in 2025, then i said no season 7 which already started, then it gave me the answer, maybe i should have not asked copilot, yet it was great at tracking an old home from the 70s earlier today with not much info, very strange.

Siri is a voice assistant while Gemini is AI model so they a bit different and perform different tasks. Having said that, Gemini with Google maps is very useful. Apple Maps will also probably get Siri (Gemini backed) support.

The first time I tried Claude (just a few months ago), my first inquiry was for it to create a basic photography tutorial with specific references to a particular camera model. Among other errors, the result stated that opening the aperture will let less light in (it's the opposite) and it misidentified dials on the camera, even assuming the camera had controls that it does not. I would not trust one of these things where accurate answers are important.

I can look at Google Maps without using navigation and see traffic data everywhere before I leave. With Apple Maps not so much, not even close. Both know where all users are exactly. Apple gives the data to Google in the app. So why does Apple choose to make such a poor product that lacks a basic functionality? Apple makes money pushing people to better apps, they lose money on all their free apps. Marketing 101 put ads in free apps and play the misleading “privacy” card.

The other day Apple Maps misled me again, took me some absurdly long route instead of the most direct. No traffic to speak of either, I immediately engaged Siri from CarPlay and told it to inform its own boss at Apple that it sucks and needs to be shutdown for our safety. What did Siri do next? It says “You want me to text ‘some random person I know in my contacts from WORK’ and tell them they suck?”. I instantly switched to Google Maps in the car. INSTANT. DONE with Apple Maps and even more done with Siri.

If you want another upgrade from Google Maps try Waze. I commute from the inner city to suburbs daily. Google Maps and Apple seem to always prioritize the freeway, even when traffic is heavier.

When I use Waze it weaves me around back streets and only connects with the freeway beyond the worst traffic areas. Saves a considerable amount of time!

Fort important things use multiple ones, one time copilot accused gemini of hallucinating 😄

Is this why the awful infotainment system in my Chevy is randomly putting stop signs where they don't belong? Why is there AI in my map. There is no reason for it to be there.
