Google specialises in being very accurate where Apple specialises in being very beautiful. Combine both and live well :)

How about the number of people who have devices that don't use any Maps app, there are a lot of children out there with iPod Touch's and iPad's that aren't using the Maps app and thus don't need to "replace" it.

So saying that because only 10mil out of 100mil+ people have downloaded Google Maps means people are choosing to stay with Apple Maps is a bit absurd.

You can still download it on an iPod, just can't use turn-by-turn.

Edit: never mind, misread your post.

Has there been a study to show that Google maps is better internationally? That's a serious question, because although a lot of complaints on forums like this seem to be from international users, the only report I've read is that Apple's maps rocks in China; Google not so much. This is apparently due to Apple using a gov't sanctioned mapping data company while Google is pulling bits and pieces from various sources.

To be honest, I haven't come across any such study for any country. I'm basing what I'm saying off of tech sites, such as The Verge, and other news sources, such as CNN, etc. Where did you read Google is not as good in China?

It's amazing to see how people spin the 10M+ download in just 3 days to be negative or unimpressive.

10 million downloads is actually a fairly large number. Not everyone uses their iOS device to download apps, but every connected iOS 5 device prompted each user to update their device with a notification. Many iOS devices are used by schools and other facilities that will not normally download applications.

In addition, a lot of people still may not know how to download apps or are just unaware that the Google Maps app released. I let a friend know yesterday and he downloaded it on the spot. You'd be surprised how many people just don't know how to take advantage of their devices or keep up to date with new apps, even when the information from the App Store charts is in front of them. I'm a teaching assistant for a new media class at my college so I'm well aware that these people exist.

It could also be that not uses mapping apps and would have no reason to download Google Maps.

More macrumors spin - somehow manages to represent the story as pro apple. I am very much an Apple fan but can accept their failings (and their competitor's better offerings).

Even if Maps failed, it was a good idea for Apple to stop using Google Maps. Now Google has to make their own app, and it's actually good and not all limited! Plus, we have another maps choice, Apple Maps, which is actually decent or very good in some places, including where I live (all that matters to me). And if it sucks for you, well then you'll have to use Google Maps. I have both (and MapQuest) just in case.

...and 2M Iphone 5s for the first weekend in a country with 1.3B+ people to be impressive.

Oh please. Most of those people earn like 3 dollars a day.

----------

Steve Jobs wouldn't want me to download it.

Hahaha
Steve Jobs stuck Google Maps into iOS's map app! He forced lots of people to download it, not that they were unwilling.

I probably won't use this, at least till it gets out of beta, but it is good that we have more options. I've used Apple maps around San Francisco, LA, Seattle and a few states in the northeast, Atlanta and Raleigh NC and it has worked well for me. However, choice is good. Nice to have backup.

Before the Google Maps app was released, I predicted an eventual Google Maps app would be downloaded and installed by MILLIONS of iOS users almost immediately. In relative terms, over a weekend is pretty darn close to immediately.

I now await an apology from those forum members that told me I was full of it.

The worst part about being an Apple product user: being associated with oblivious koolaid-swallowing fanboi-ness. Seriously, if everyone were a fanboi, Apple would never innovate because people would be content with mediocrity.

Where exactly? You mean where they point out the percentage of iOS6 users, just to put things in perspective, which is what good journalism entails?

No

First they say its still a small percentage of IOS users. Fine.

Then they compare the downloads of google maps with IO6. IOS6 is a pushed update that appears as popups that you have to cancel and actively avoid downloading. Google maps is an app you have to find yourself. Not a fair comparison.

Then they go onto say :

"The number of iOS 6 downloads has likely increased quite a bit over the last three months, indicating that the majority of iOS users have chosen to stick with Apple's Maps application rather than switching to Google Maps, despite the rampant complaints about the quality of the built-in app. " - Macrumours

That isn't even logically consistent. How can you say people over the last three MONTHS have decided to "stick with apple maps" when you could only download google maps over the last few DAYS.

I love apple stuff, but that really is spin. You really can't put spin on a product that is so bad that Apple even apologised for it. Its bad everyone knows its bad and everyone who finds out you can get google maps back on their phone downloads it.

I will not download it!

18 months ago, I bought the Tom Tom app because Google would not put turn by turn directions on their app. Now that apple came out with their own app- which by the way has not failed me yet- Google decides to add turn by turn directions!?!? You're $50 dollars too late Google! I used Apple Maps as my primary with Siri integration and the Tom Tom app as my secondary.....I do not need a third app....even if its so called free!

Maybe you are the one who is drinking the kool aid. I see a lot of major discontent in this forum, many of them are demanding Apple to step up to counter Google dominance. Some suggest a "marriage" between Apple & Google, between form & function, between aesthetics and data.

Apple makes the best end user OS, regardless of platform.

Really? Care to share your opinion why you think this? Care to explain to me why my Mac with OS X 10.6/Snow Leopard didn't allow me to resize windows from any corner of the window while I've had this ability on my Windows PC's for almost a decade? Up until OS X 10.7 / Lion (which released last year in 2011), Mac users had to drag the lower-right corner of a window in order to resize it instead of dragging any corner.

With usability issues like I just mentioned, statements like "Apple makes the best OS" don't seem justifiable or defensible to me.

Bitter?

You realize your anger is misplaced. As it's clear you haven't read the full thread, I'll explain this again.

Apple had a contract with Google that pre-dated TbT and other features.
Apple wanted TbT and other features
Google, in exchange, wanted better branding of their app and the integration of Lattitude.
Apple didn't want to concede
Google didn't want to concede
They were at an impasse.
Apple kicked Google to the curb.

Cut to the present: Google releases an App. They get the branding they were requesting (the app is called Google Maps). I'm not sure whether or not they will integrate Lattitude with Google Maps. And to be honest - I haven't checked the App Store if there is a Lattitude app. But regardless - you wanting to blame Apple is shortsighted. Both companies couldn't reach an agreement.

Unless you just think Google should have just caved to any demands Apple was making. If that's the case - you shouldn't ever own or manage a business.

My .02.

This discussion just made me think of the reason ... the people doing the study that were running on Apple maps are still lost somewhere out there :D.

In New Zealand there is absolutely no contest. I got more inaccurate info that accurate in the time we had to use Apple maps. Google is so welcome! In Dunedin Apple maps even put the International Airport 50km from where it actually is ><.

But it's only been two days. I'm sure it will go up. BTW, I don't think Google ever had 100% penetration.

heh heh, google map is the default map for IOS 5 and before, by definition it has 100% penetration. Sure, the download number will continue to go up.. But Google map will never get to 100% since a lot of folks never use map to start with and other find other IOS map solution in the last 3 months already. For Google, they loss the opportunity to collect user data which help their ads business. This is why Google want to populate their app on every mobile device.

The people have spoken! More people use apple maps.

IMO, this is bad for apple... It will take years for apple to fix the problems. Plenty of time for the average user to get frustrated and switch over to windows or android phones.

Oh yeah. I feel silly now. But, I think that sooner or later Apple was going to release their own mapping app anyways.

That's hilarious:D. But it's great that iOS now supports Google Maps. Win-win for iOS users.

I see a person who needs to read a little more carefully before replying. I didn't say the entire MacRumors population is fanbois. I'd say most aren't, and to them CHEERS for dissenting and making Apple continue to innovate instead of believing that they do no wrong. Put on some glasses, son.
