Why won't they allow contact integration from the device? It's allowed by Apple.

These means to force you to upload your data to them are the very reason I stay as far away from Google, FB and the like who want all my info. Why is it that most just hand it over like it's no big deal? It is a big deal actually, no thanks.

More and more apps require these terms, more often then not I pass on them. Point being is that it's on my phone for a reason, and if I wanted google to have it, I would just as well upload a csv file to the internets.

Apple Maps uses databases that, when updated, update each time you go back to the map unless you are offline. This means that you get the most up to date map, which doesn't necessarily mean it's good it's just up to date, that they have at all times as I understand it. :)

Up to date from the last point they updated it... which in my area means 10 years ago, lol!

Search your Google Contacts... not the contacts stored on my phone? Ugh. I guess I should transfer them all over to Google Contacts then...
I came here to upvote this. Thanks for speaking my mind.

I happen to use Google Contacts (and find it hard to switch because I rely too much on Gmail, and email + contacts are too hard to separate), but this is still wrong of Google to force on people this way.

No wonder Apple had to make their own maps app.

What the heck do you need Google maps on an iPad for?
I use an iPad mini with LTE as my main mobile device. Luckily, I'm ok with Apple Maps anyway.

That is what I did a while ago so I am not locked into something that is not cross platform
I am no 'tin foil hat' type, but knowing that Google makes its money on buying and selling my information, I am not keen on spoon feeding them yet MORE information for their data parsers. Especially information that really isn't mine to give away. That is, I am glad that Google is staying away from my Apple contacts. If they were nice enough to ask I'd still decline.

They make some neat online stuff. It would almost be nice if we could pay for it out-right and opt out of market metrics.

Thanks, Google!

The entire Apple community should come together to thank Google for this.

A different sort of company would do everything they could to kill the iPhone. But instead, Google helps out the entire Apple community by releasing great new software for Apple's platform.

Hey - do you see Nokia writing great software that makes iOS and iPhones more valuable? How about RIM?

But Google has always been there for Apple. They were the ones that made the iPhone a great mapping tool in the first place. And now they continue on.

Thanks, Google!

Google Maps do the same and always have.

This update is to structure and capabilities of the app itself NOT the map data which updates DAILY. Google still updates their maps far more frequently and better than Apple does. If you find an error in a street display on Google and report it the change to correct the error often appears in the app within 48 hours.

Would love to have a voice search option.

The pieces are all there: the Google Search app (the one that's sort of Siri-like) exists and works well, and they have integrated voice search into the YouTube app, so why not include it in the navigation app? It'd be great for the car.

Sure, but that's just good business, not altruism of any kind. Google knows that if they intentionally kept out of the iOS space just to piss off Apple, they'd also lose out on millions of dollars worth of advertising/data mining opportunity.

Same reason Microsoft Office exists for Mac.

Google does it because they get something out of it, not because they're such nice guys.

Nokia released their map app for iOS (whether it's great or not, they did it). RIM is just trying to stay alive :)

It's time to sue Apple for Maps

Apple's Maps application simply suck. Why don't Apple give us an option to choose the default map application, i.e. Google Maps? Either voluntarily, or by court order.

It remembers recent searches for me.... maybe because I'm logged in? Are you?

Yeah, I agree no search in phone contacts is ANNOYING... I don't know if I want to switch over to google contacts... Anyone know if that is difficult to do?

I would say no to switching over to Google Contacts, but that's just my preference. iCloud closely adheres to the vCard specification contrary to Google's proprietary contact record types.

Search your Google Contacts... not the contacts stored on my phone? Ugh. I guess I should transfer them all over to Google Contacts then...

I prefer iCloud's contacts over Google's because iCloud gives you more fields for things like email addresses (if you have an absurd number like I do for some reason). I guess I could copy everything over to Google, but it would just be easier to use Apple Maps and use the iCloud contacts already on my phone.

Thank google ?

Do you have any ideia how many millions or billions... Google makes of metrics from people that use their software on iPhones/iPads ?

Google is not doing anyone a favor... it's business...
You should stop thinking either company makes favors to others...

I like Apple maps

Continued lack of vector data makes Apple Maps superior to Google maps, IMO. It's about the only thing Apple Maps has on Google Maps, but it makes a huge difference.

Looking forward to seeing what kind of enhancements Apple Maps will get in iOS 7.

I couldn't agree more.

Lie, in my city Google Maps on PC shows several road updates that the mobile version does not show so NO, they do not use the same database (most up to date one)

In wonderland... I have supplied updates that have been approved two weeks ago and they still do not appear on Google Maps (either PC or iPhone version)

Google maps has vector data....

http://appleinsider.com/articles/12...rings-vectors-transit-and-navigation-features

From the article

The new Google Maps uses vector imaging just like Apple's Maps, resulting in a similar information scaling that incrementally displays new data as you zoom in. Like Apple's Maps, Google now presents live 3D building models that appear only when you zoom into the block level.

While Google had earlier incorporated a vector-based maps presentation in its Android app, it could not force Apple to use this data in the Maps client bundled with iOS. This allowed Apple to launch its own Maps app this summer with the first vector based maps seen on the platform.
