Less is more. Goodbye clutter that I don’t use anyway. This is way better!

I'm a Waze man myself, so this is a non-issue for me.

I use Google Maps for "entertainment" and quick searches at home prior to a trip, and I never use Apple Maps as I find it SLOOOOOW to load.

I find it very funny how independent Waze still is. By far the best option to me.

Regardless which app anyone thinks is better, I stopped using Google maps years ago. I do not need or want ads following me based on places I go, ever. It’s creepy and invasive while also badly missing the mark on what any of my interests or consumer desires are. I stopped using Chrome for the same reason.

it would be good if it gave a way to show you how far a route is. As far as i can tell it only shows this information for about 0.2 seconds before calculating the time and replacing it with the time. no way to see the distance of a route.

In one sense this change is a bit bizarre because the bottom bar really isn’t where the clutter is. But I also never use the bottom bar so won’t miss them
I think the problem with these developers is when they make these changes (which some people will like while others will not) they should just add a setting that a user can toggle to enable this new view or disable it. Instead of just making drastic changes and enforcing them on everyone. This is what Google Developers overseas do they feel they know best and user input is not important or simply ignored.

It’s not Google, therefore privacy and data security is better in every way.
Plus the navigation is excellent.
I would never use a Google service in my life ever again.
The navigation is excellent? It still sends me to non existent intersections in one of the most data available areas of the world.

It's actually the opposite, Apple Maps has comprehensive "Look Around" coverage in many countries outside of the US but abysmal coverage in the US. Almost all of Canada is covered but in the US it's limited to the largest cities and metro areas and/or major tourist destination. Midsized and smaller cities still don't have coverage (to say nothing about small towns) almost 10 years after launch and the satellite photos in some places are many, many, many years out of date.

Google's StreetView is much more comprehensive (albeit lower quality) and in some places has multiple years of captures you can browse through.
This! I’m house searching and nearly every address I’ve entered (I prefer small towns) has the Apple “Look Around” view here in Germany.

Explore and Go where almost identical other than what appears beneath the map, aka Explore shows whats going on locally and Go shows where to go next. Presumably having just one Explore button makes more sense and then under the map could just have a toggle between the two or merge them.

As for loosing Contribute direct access, that makes sense having it less prominent since unlike Waze where the majority of the community is actively involved, much less so seemingly on Google.

However there is so much room for improvement with the app, and this change is certainly not something I would have prioritized.

To note, on "6.129.1..." and no new version here on latest iOS 18 beta. And yes, force quite app, no change so imagine maybe something server side where they are presumably rolling out slowly and or for select users.

You see a lot of apps following this trend. Not happy about it. I prefer quick access from the bottom toolbar.

It's good if they choose the right options, with intelligent sub-menus.

The problem is too many companies have been slapping buttons in to the main navigation to drive more "engagement."

This sounds like an improvement by reducing it to the buttons you are most likely to need.

Just wished Apple Maps worked great in the UK.

It does work great if you know the destination address. If anything, Apple Maps is better than Google Maps in terms of the actual car navigation experience.

It’s just that Google’s location database is soooooo much more accurate and complete. So it’s much better at finding the right destination for random searches. Always been that way.

Unfortunately it still is too cluttered for me, too many buttons, too much information and definitely unneeded “Latest in the area” view which obscures half of my map. I like the simplicity of Apple maps.
