Bash? Aren’t tracking your every move even when turned off and not in actual use features of google maps and other google products. According to Google tracking you is fair trade off for a free app.

Or do you feel tracking you even when turned off and not running is a bad thing to be bashed?

There are a number of apps, even things like weather apps that also track, report and sell your every move. Course you get instant weather at your location, so that’s fair right.

At least with Apple supplied apps you can actually turn off tracking and reporting of your every move.

Anyone want a mapping app that uses GPS, doesn’t need to have internet connection to do it try maps.me. You do have to download maps of desired location/countries.

My Garmin GPS is spot on with timing to destination, has great traffic reporting and maps are update every couple months.

What can be turned off is you getting target ads on your phone. What is never off, even when google maps. Is not up and running is tracking your every move and selling that data to anyone that pays. Now you been educated.
You’re tracked and your info is stored ONLY when Location History is turned on. You CAN turn it off. READ!!

I use Waze for navigation and Google maps for POIs. Apple maps is not bad but at the moment it cannot match google maps. No street view and it has to open another app for photos.

The only time I ever use Apple Maps is if I just want to say "Hey Siri, take me home." If I ever have to open the app up, you couldn't pay me to choose Apple Maps. It is inferior in every way, shape, and form IMO.

I won’t waste my time researching it for you, but that’s patently false. It recently came out that tracking takes place regardless if you turn it off or not. And regardless if you are using ap or not. Simply having it on your phone Google tracks you. If I come across article I will post it, busy working at moment.

So what? Just by having a cell phone you are always being tracked.

Apple Maps sucks and Apple should never have abandoned Google Maps just for pride.

Google Maps is probably the 2nd app I rely the most on my phone, the first one being Waze. Google Maps and the compass on the iPhone 3GS have saved my ass during a very dark night in Rio de Janeiro and I’ll be forever thankful.

Meanwhile Apple Maps is useless 6 years on and except for those Apple Watch vibrations it’s worse in every possible way.

IIRC, it came out that turning off one particular location option did not turn off every single location feature. Turning off location history may not turn off location data that Assistant uses for instance. Two different use cases with two separate opt ins and opt outs. This was my understanding at least but I'm not taking the time to look it up now.

Anyways, Google can't track your location if you don't give it access. I have it set to only give it location access when the app is in use. It can't collect location dats that it doesn't have access to.

I don’t promote or use companies that see me as profit making tool selling my meta data to anyone for anything if can at all help it or find alternative.
That’s what!

What is quite clear is that Google, Facebook and other companies basically lie to users. Until found out, and then try to excuse their lies with double talk and benefits to users.

There need to be laws in place with massive fines and jail time for executives when switch for turning off tracking has loopholes.

Do not track means do not track, period.

Ok looks like I was right. A user thought turning off the location history feature in Google maps would stop all tracking across all Google products. I always understood the option was only in the context of that feature but I get why people who aren't especially tech savvy would get confused though, they just see Google.

Anyways, back to topic, Google maps is awesome. I keep trying to use Apple maps but something about it I find lacking. It can normally get me to where I need to go but the routes haven't always been the best, IME. I also find it's much more forgiving and requires less steps when trying to find information on a business.

Eh you’re over exaggerating just for the sake of making a point. It’s inferior sure but it’s not useless. Before Apple opened up CarPlay I used it and wasn’t “useless”

Apple maps works great for me as does map.me. I used to use Google stuff, now I avoid it if I can.

Your opinion of opinion opposers wasn’t asked for either. So what’s that about. Sorta kettle calling pot black isn’t it.

Lmao Apple maps is inferior. I’m not bashing it but it’s just the truth. Google is better with a way better ui. Apple maps now is serviceable where it wasn’t at launch

Since getting CarPlay in my new car i've been using Apple Maps, about a year now, and its never let me down and works brilliantly for me. Its also much nicer looking on CarPlay than Google Maps. Also tried Waze via CarPlay and thats just ugly!!

Its had speed limits on it for ages as well plus integrates better with my phone. When i connect to the car via the cable and load apple Maps it will offer suggestions for destinations based on my locations such as Home and Work plus i use the calendar on my phone for as much as i can and that way it will automatically offer those locations on startup as well meaning i rarely have to search for anything. The automatic rerouting for traffic etc or reporting of incidents is generally pretty good as well. I used it for driving 2500 miles from the UK, round France and back and it never let me down once and i'm now doing a 30 mile each way commute to work which has various options for routes and it nearly always picks the best one each morning based on where its busy as it can differ.

I also make a lot of use of "Hey Siri" to set new directions whilst driving as well and i would say 95% of the time it will work fine including picking up my requests with the radio on and over the road noise whilst on the motorway.

Change to DuckDuckGo it’s so simple and no more google snooping

That's exactly right. But does not change what I said. Apple allows one of the biggest data mining companies to be a default search engine. How many consumers know how to change their default search engine? Or even know what DuckDuckGo is?

The ability to be able to choose and permanently store map data locally is why I tend to use google maps.

Also there is a weird delay on Apple maps of voice to UI.

It’ll tell me to turn right a few seconds after the UI has already told me to turn right.

So who is responsible for consumers to know? Apparently Apple. Why would anyone take responsibility upon their own shoulders.

I recently had email issues on my phone. I reasearched the problem, tried several fixes and wonder of wonders, I solved the issue.

I could have come here and blamed Apple, but as frustrated as I felt, I solved the problem.

Use google, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, weather channel app if you want to. Maybe some have no issue being tracked and lied to about it. Choose your poison. I used to like and use google maps. Then I learned how they operate and obscure what and when they track. Other mapping apps may or may not be “better”, I alter my choices based on what is important to me.

With all that said, I know full well AT&T tracks me constantly as well. Also recall recent article where it came out they have been selling that data to anyone. Believe me if their were viable alternative I would investigate them.

In the end all we each have is the integrity of people we deal with. It is quite clear companies run by people with integrity are rare.

Maps.me stores all maps on phone that you download. Great when no internet connection available. GPS works directly with satellites.

The two face palms in your avatar are very appropriate :)

Back on Topic.
I personally prefer Google Maps. GM's has been more reliable in my experience and I prefer all the info available to me on the display.

Don't forget store reward programs, who knows where your purchasing data is being sold. Also never pay with credit card and provide your zip, usually that's enough for stores to know exactly who you are.

I think Google is pretty smart in how they handle data. Your data is never directly sold to a third party and you get to see the benefit from providing that data, through live street traffic, store traffic, recommendations and so on and it all tends to be very accurate. It's a really great service.

Course you going on and on about others “derailing” topic of thread is in no way the same derailment.

Was’t aware this was court, your objection is noted for the record, and overruled.

The ruling from the bench is; Any topics or issues related to, and with direct connection to, original topic, are fair game.

Gavel strikes.......

Maps.me ?

Maps.me ?
Look it up in App Store. Have used it a couple years now. It’s super fast, as maps are stored in your phone. You can decide what countries, regions, states, provinces to download. They update every few months. Don’t need cell service or WiFi just clear view of satellites for GPS. So ideal in remote areas, forests, back country with no cell reception. Data for entire planet is about 35 GB. It’s just another option.

I've used Maps.me for a while now for when we're out walking as it has a lot of footpaths etc on around us. I used to use the OpenStreetMap app but that stopped working so had to ditch it.
