Ask yourself the same question but replace "map apps" with "google voice" or "flash".

Except that google voice was ultimately approved by Apple and the whole Flash issue has been dissected ad nauseum. Apple's position on Flash is that it is a buggy, crash inducing, battery hog.
I'll leave the technical merits of that conversation to others with a lot more expertise than I have on Flash- but I DO know that most of the crashes I have on my computer based web browsers are a result of Flash.

The point was that updating for the sake of fluffy features like 3d vector drawings without adding useful features is a waste of precious time, money and memory resources.

actually the vector based maps take up MUCH LESS memory than the tile based method that is currently used, making offline caching available. there are no more static zoom levels, all zoom levels are fluid and flow into one another now

Yeah, this is really to bad. Maps is stuck to iOS updates rather than Google updates. The only way that we will see a change in this is if Apple removes the Maps app from built in, to something you can download in the app store.

I have no interest in ditching the iPhone anytime soon, but this is the exact reason I stopped using Windows Media Center. Because it is built into Windows and not a stand alone app, the updates only come with major Windows releases, which is far, far to slow to keep up to date with new idea's and competition.

I seem to remember Google pulled the Gmail app from Android for this very reason as well. Instead of updating the app with new versions of Android, they can update it whenever they want.

Come on Apple, pull the Maps app out of iOS!

The reason they haven't updated the maps is because they are trying to distance themselves from Google. If you read the macrumors homepage, it will explain Apples aquisition of a couple companies. One company being a US based company and another being a Canadian. Additionally, they have posted 4 job openings with "primary knowledge" in navigation software engineering.

Your iDevices will soon have an updated navigation app, but i wouldn't expect it until late 2011...just my .02 though.

Probably because if Apple updated it no one would buy Sygic, Navigon, TomTom or any of the others.

To be fair, the same argument could be said of Google/Android. OK there is the cut that Apple get from app store sales (I have no idea of the arrangements for app sales to Android users), but I would have thought that would be a fairly marginal cost to Apple, overall.

As usual Apple consumers lose because Apple decides to distance themselves from a company that could very well enhance and improve the user experience for iOS platform.

The brainwashing will begin and like Flash you'll have Apple fanatics droning on how much they don't need Google maps and Google products.

Steve Jobs is the Jim Jones of the Apple cult.

what does that even mean?

Not only will you be able to search for a location, but Apple maps will actually give you directions as you drive there. I can't wait... 2002 is going to be so exciting!

Actually sounds like you're the brainwashed one. All of your recent posts are only attempts to bash Apple or the iPhone; haven't seen anything constructive in any of them. If you don't like the iPhone, why are you wasting your time and ours?

And Google had their chance to enhance and improve the user experience...instead they pulled a Microsoft and copied it, filed off the serial numbers and started selling it as their own.
