Google maps show no directional arrow

Did it ever do that, I don't think it did. I use gmaps everyday.

Never has as far as I know. I stopped using it when Apple released their maps app. The Apple one does not have an arrow either.

I also believe you have to have compass calibration enabled under system services in location privacy settings.

C DM is right, I have to enable compass calibration for the arrow to appear.
