I definitely agree that the built in map app is bare bones and is nowhere near as useful as those available on other smart phones. Apple's recent acquisition of map specific companies and solicitation for engineers who have this kind of expertise gives hope for a much more robust future. Whether it's part of the next version of the IOS, or a standalone app remains to be seen.

Maps on iOS already does this.... It saved my life while I was in New York.

Is this real? If so how did you do that? Thanks in advance.

Gmaps on the iPhone still has the same interface as it did in 2007 G1.

Google maps and youtube haven't really been updated since they debuted on iPhone.

Wrong! Maps has been updated several times since the initial release of the iPhone (I've had every version, so I know the changes that were made.) In fact, when Android was first introduced, people were shocked that Google had updated the iPhone Maps before their own platform; now of course, Google has made their own Android maps leaps and bounds ahead of the iPhone version, but still, to say it has never been updated is plain wrong. Case in point:

  • Version 1.1.3 of iPhone OS introduced the "Locate Me" feature. (January 15, 2008)
  • Version 2.2 introduced "Google Street View", "Public Transit and Walking Directions", "Display Address of Dropped Pins", "Share Location via Email", and "Cache of Recent Locations". (November 21, 2008)
  • Version 3.2 added the "Terrain View" which the OP is referring to. (April 3, 2010)

There were numerous other minor updates in between those listed above, mostly to the Maps' API.

Is this real? If so how did you do that? Thanks in advance.

Yes, as of version 3.2 of the iPhone OS. Only works in certain areas of certain cities (just like the android version) and you do need to zoom in almost all the way. Works for downtown Los Angeles where I live part time.

That being said, it would be great if we did get full-on, spoken, turn by turn navigation. Hopefully Apple will either update Google Maps or has a competing product up their sleeve that they've been working on... we shall see.

Wirelessly posted (iPhone 3GS: Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_2_1 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/533.17.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.0.2 Mobile/8C148 Safari/6533.18.5)

I just checked Phoenix and downtown has buildings as well. Nice. I did not know maps had updated like that. Very cool.

no, they haven't done the UK, our Cities are all too complicated for that currently lol, i would assume its a lot simpler in the grid systems of US Cities

no, its actually more of a government issue. some governments do not allow street view, or more in depth views of a city.

it has nothing to do with whether or not a city is 'more complicated' than others.

that's an old view that has been present for a while. The new Google Maps has vector rendered buildings that can be rotated and viewed in a 3D plane.
