Just out of curiosity how good has Google Maps gotten in the past 5 years? I have not had it nor Waze on my phone in about that long. I use AppleMaps because it’s also on my other apple devices including my Mac as long with all my favorites and settings. It’s nicer using an application on the Mac over a website. Can it download maps for offline use? I wish Apple Maps would have such a feature as when one is in the mountains with no cell reception I don’t want to resort to using paper maps which hardly anyone uses these days. I ask because I don’t exactly want to download it nor Waze unless it’s gotten much much better over Applemaps.

It's always been good. Question is AppleMaps still a joke? Do they have a web version you can access anyplace?
Use googlemaps all the time, no need for waze as it's also part of google.
Always good to have paper maps handy just in case especially in remote places, it's a good failsafe when your device fails.

True. I have a Garmin for those situations.

When we finally got an iOS (don't remember the #) that allowed Google Maps on the iPhone, I struggled to get it to work for two weeks; finally threw in the towel and visited GeekSquad at bestbuy; first person couldn't get it to work in 30 minutes, second person took 20 and finally got it functioning. It then stopped working again at the next ".1" iOS revision.

Nowadays I'll go to Google Maps on the desktop, print out a map to where I'm going, use Apple Maps in the car, and then the printout when AM doesn't work (and it hasn't worked for me, once, yet).

I think that you should have a look at "Guru Maps Pro" for your iPhone and iPad. There are vector maps for all parts of the world. You can buy/download country by country or region by region in big countries. It does not take up much space because it is a vector app. Works perfectly off line. - Lots of options to add other types of maps and information too. Probably much better in the mountains that Google Maps (and Apple Maps).

Maps.me has been my go to app for offline maps, and it is totally free. Great for travel or when you don't want to use data when out and about.

I recommend checking out “organic maps”. It’s made by the OG makers of maps.me after maps.me changed hands. There’s detail in open street maps that Apple and Google maps don’t have so I use organic maps to supplement my maps usage & on vacation as a backup.

Thanks for the tip, will check that out.

One thing I really like about Googlemaps is the visual details. There is just enough there with out being distracting. As much as I like map.me, I find it visual overwhelming and wish they would reduce the detail levels and make it more cleaner looking.

IMO, don't replace google or apple maps; use apps like organic maps, maps.me, (anything using openstreetmaps as a map foundation) to SUPPLEMENT the other.

While Google & Apple maps will have info like hours, reviews, street view, etc. any app that uses open street maps will, generally, have details & updates that Google and Apple don't focus on: true offline mode with full country downloads, what's actually on the ground: walking/hiking trails, new roads/ subdivisions/ buildings updated faster than google & apple maps, park benches, public bathrooms, dog parks, etc.

The OP of this thread had no reception & had to use a Garmin to find his way back. Organic Maps is a free download with free maps of entire countries with free monthly updates riding off of community input from OpenStreetMaps. If you're able, contribute back to OSM & everyone's map improves as (I believe but don't have a reference) google & apple have used OSM data to supplement their own.

Their data collection is great, if you’re into being spyed on

I did a big search for all sorts of map providers trying to find a secure one, funny enough Apple Maps won

I view all google software and services as spyware
