Google Nexus One price drop in the US

Yesterday we reported that Google’s long awaited own-brand phone, the Google Nexus One, hadn’t enjoyed the best start in life, having only sold 20,000 units in its first week in the US. Our suggestion that the all-powerful Google probably wasn’t too bothered might have been a touch presumptuous though, as the phone has just had its price slashed.

Up until today, anyone in the US who’d wanted to upgrade to the Nexus One on T-Mobile had to pay out $379 (£230). With the price cut in effect, this figure stands at $279 (£170).

Not only that, but anyone who’s already upgraded receive a $100 (£60) refund. Very nice too. If you want to have a Nexus One shipped over to these shores, the SIM-free handset costs $529 (£325). Google maintains that a UK version is ‘coming soon’ but it all depends on bagging a UK network – all signs currently point to Vodafone.

There seems to always be more to the story. I think its quite a good thing that Google kept negotiating to get the best price they could for their customers.

Google has made some changes to the pricing structures for the Nexus One. A Google spokesperson told Phone Scoop in an email, "Previously there were two price points for those fully eligible for T-Mobile upgrades. Those without data plans were paying $279 for the Nexus One, and those with data plans were being charged $379. We worked with T-Mobile and are now able to offer the higher upgrade discount to all existing fully eligible T-Mobile subscribers. This price is now $279.{my input: for people who are eligible to upgrade, roughly 22 months since last subsidy} Refunds will be granted to all eligible subscribers who previously purchased the Nexus One at $379. This doesn't affect any eligible customers who bought the phone for $279." The Nexus One remains $529 for those who choose to buy it with no contract, and $179 for new T-Mobile customers.
