Between your post and a couple of reviews I read, I cancelled my order for the Nexus TV. 😱
I got too excited, with visions of a whole Play Store worth of apps available. But as you rightly point out, not quite true.
For now, I'll try installing Plex Connect and see if ATV can be made better. For some reason, lately Air Play doesn't seem too stable for me. Yes, I have the latest Airport Express.
Hah, my main issue with the Roku is the awful user interface. I bought one when they introduced the new design to try, and it ended up in a drawer. It's too ugly, depressing and inconsistent, looks like HT from the early 2000s 😀
Seeing the early reviews (Gizmodo) of how broken the interface is in presenting things you don't want as suggestions, and how limited the play store is in not having a full range of apps, I think you made a good choice.
Anyway, Apple has an answer to apps and games and that's called Airplay mirroring if you really want to. I agree there could be more channels, particularly here in Australia, SBS on Demand and ABC iView to name a few but this is really just a matter of Apple getting content providers on board, which I don't see as a matter of if but when.
At the moment Apple unashamedly lets catch up providers stream content through AirPlay, it wont be a distant future before Apple offers some sort of legitimate way of doing it.
