8 Bn people on this world and maybe 1 Bn of them have an Apple product (iPhone/iPad/Mac). So Google is paying $18 per device to be the nr. 1 search engine? I highly doubt that.

The amount of money they make by the user could quite possibly be more than 10x that amount.
Yes, see my other posting above. Google is making at least $20 per human being just from search ads (assuming a world population of 8 billion), so maybe twice of that per actual Google user, and probably more in the case of Apple users in particular.

That is an absurd amount of money if true.... And now I'm wondering how much money Google makes off our searches and data... Must be astonomical.

At what point will we start questioning this? First they said 3 Billion. Then they said 10 Billion. Now they say 20 Billion. And all these are unofficial numbers. When will we start wondering if any of this is real?

Apple has confirmed in court that it’s billions. So it’s at least in the ballpark. And since Google earns a a large multiple of that with their search ads, the numbers also seem plausible.

Apple is all about the privacy of its users unless money is involved 😆
Well... yeah, have you looked at how many trackers from Google are blocked by Apple?
It's the search results and the order you see them in that Google should be making money from business not YOU.
The only alternative is for Apple to enter search as they did with maps.

Honestly the most disgusting and insulting thing I’ve read all year is when Eddy Cue testified that the reason Google is the default is because it’s the best. Nevermind the $20 billion we get from them per year.

I am pretty sure EU will sense an opportunity in these numbers and then push for DuckDuckGo.
EU pushes for no default and unrestricted ability to switch engines. Meanwhile, we know in which sense Apple considers Google to be best in slot. Apart from Microsoft/Bing (which incidentally feeds DuckDuckGo), none can split that kind of money just for that.

I wonder why go after iOS… why not make android stop making google default search engine on those as well???

Another reason I don’t trust google. If a company has a revenue and ability to theoretically pay a company just to be the default search engine what other back room deals are going on. Sadly you can’t be 100% free of the Google enterprise system. Either a company requires you to use it or a school has implemented it. I just find it aggravating whenever I go to a website and it asks me to log in with Google.

You know that statement about consumers:

Well you can be paying AND be the product, simultaneously

Exactly. The steady march of progress. This seems to be the new way sadly. I give it five years, for example, before all the streaming services no longer offer and ad-free plan, and the plan with ads costs as much as the ad-free plan today.

It seems like the fact that Google feels like it needs to pay Apple to be the default search engine proves it is not a monopoly. It might be a monopolistic practice but if Google felt like it was truly in a monopolistic position why would they pay Apple. The act of paying them a significant sum of money shows that Google needs Apple more than Apple need Google because there are other viable options.

In the end, business is business. If you want to be on top of the billboard you have to pay. If you want to be on top of the list, you have to pay. So what's wrong with that?
If Google wants to be on top of the list... well, it has to pay!

This. It just makes me crazy every time I see it. There are outdated online tutorials on how you can stop this from happening in Google settings. But they’re no long accurate - assuming they ever were. It seems there is nothing to be done about these obnoxious pop ups.

Apple gets $20B per year from Google for doing nothing. They get 30% on in-app purchases on the App Store for doing nothing.

I wonder what percentage of their profit is from doing nothing?
I wouldn't call that "doing nothing".

As I mentioned earlier, Apple has aggregated the best customers in the world, and they did this by making a great product that people are willing to pay a premium for, made possible by their control over hardware and software.

So in order for Apple to earn that 30%, they need to work hard to keep me as an Apple user (otherwise I would just go to Android and Apple wouldn't get a cut of any money I spend on apps in the google play store). I don't feel that 30% is at all unreasonable for the role they play in growing the pie for all developers.

70% of a larger pie is still better than 100% of a very small one.
