With the launch of the Pixel 10 smartphones, Google announced new AI functionality that's coming to its Google Photos app and service.

Users will be able to describe the edits that they want to make with text or voice in the Google Photos editing interface, and the changes will appear. Google says there will be no need to select tools or adjust sliders, with complex edits enabled through conversational AI.

Requests can be generic or specific, with Google suggesting the AI can understand even the most basic requests. Some of Google's examples:
  • Restore this old photo
  • Remove the cars in the background
  • Remove the reflections and fix the washed out colors
  • Make it better
  • Remove the glare, brighten the photo, and add clouds to the sky
  • Add fun items like a party hat or sunglasses
  • Change the background
The AI supports multiple requests in a single prompt, along with follow-up requests.

The new Google Photos functionality will be available on the Pixel 10 to start with, but it will presumably expand to other devices in the future.

Google is also adding C2PA Content Credentials to Google Photos, which will more clearly show how an image was captured or edited. C2PA Content Credentials will roll out to Google Photos on Android and iOS devices over the coming weeks.

Tim Apple's rebuttal ' Now Siri can create emojis on demand. We think you're gonna love it'

In Production:

User: “Hey Siri, can you create an emoji for me?”

Siri: “Calling Emily… because you clearly said ‘create an emoji.’

User: “No, I said emoji, not Emily.”

Siri: “Got it. Searching the web for ‘how to milk a goat.’

User: “WHAT?! No goat, Siri, just… emoji.”

Siri: “Understood. Setting your alarm for 3:00 AM tomorrow.”

User: “Siri, please stop. Just make an emoji!”

Siri: “Here’s what I found on ‘emotional damage.’”

I think this is brilliant, especially for people who don’t want to spend half their life sliding fiddly bars around in an editing app.

Meanwhile, I can already hear Federighi and Joswiak dismissing it as “just another useless chatbot,” with Timmy nodding along from the corner.

Google’s basically lapping Apple at this point when it comes to AI. You might argue this is not privacy focussed as everything is done on the servers, but I’m ok with that as I already keeping my data up in the cloud, why not let it do the hard work as well? Its all about convenience. Convenience wins.

Me last week: “Siri, start an outdoor walk.”

Siri: “opening garage door.”

Legit has been a massive problem for years and Apple has allowed this low quality assistant Siri slop to continue, year after year.

Meanwhile companies like Microsoft and Google are creating agents to help people solve real world tasks.

Apple’s greatest contribution towards AI thus far is gen-moji.

Tim Cook really is failing upwards.

most google products are great, but they need to add the ability to login a la carte. it'd be nice if we could have more sign in options whereby, signing into one google service wouldn't force every other google product to be logged in on that device. it can remain that way by default, that's fine, but they should acknowledge that some people may want to use their services while maintaining data separation between different users sessions and devices, and that with no ability to login to google apps a la carte, they make it difficult.

"Google, draw in the background a diagram of what you're really doing with these requests and my data."

Apple, 'trust me bro' on not using your data...

I think the Cue stuff is equally if not more useful. I mean it's kind of intrusive but I think if you're using any big tech services that ship has long sailed, unfortunately.

“Conversational Editing”! Huh? “Conversational”?? “Restore … Remove … Add … Change …” How is giving orders a conversation? Conversation is the spoken exchange of ideas, observations, opinions, or feelings between people. What Google advertises is simply vocal command editing. Not that I really care about it but at least Apple’s label “Image Playground” is fitting because this type of gen AI is a toy.

This is the future. And Google is the only one that can do it natively thanks to their ownership of Android. What OpenAI needs to do is partner with Apple otherwise Google will have a major advantage in terms of software. People aren't going to upload their photos to ChatGPT just to do this, it needs to be natively built in.

So far I have only seen AI create extra work for those downstream….

Companies think they are saving money by having AI send us information instead of paying a project manager to communicate with us…but having an outsourced, licensed engineer who charges $450 an hour do basic spec sheets, is going to cost them a whole lot more than whatever they pay their internal managers.

My engineering firm is currently debating how much we need to raise contract prices because all the junk AI generated information we get from clients is just wasting so much extra time.

So ya, AI solving real world problems…well not in my experience…

“Remove the reflections and fix the washed out colors” is conversational enough for me.
  • Way, way better than this Apple Intelligence.

It’s always worth remembering that the price for these tools is a complete lack of ownership of your actual photographs.

There is no way to sync Google Photos to local storage at all to create personal backups. The only way is to manually download them.

Get locked out of your Google account and all your images are gone, forever.
