Google Pixel 4/Pixel 4 XL

Can't wait for the official reviews tomorrow. Until then this phone is getting **** on like the worst smartphone ever.

Making me second guess my preorder. I just want better battery life then my Pixel 3 XL #1.

I know the iPhone 11 Pro Max is King of battery, and I'm almost tempted, but I just know my dislike of iOS will maybe make me regret getting the iPhone.

The reviewers are quiet because they probably signed an NDA. OTOH, a lot of the leaks came from Google themselves.

So it should though, if people are experiencing real issues like face unlock not working with glasses on.

I know people don't want to hear negativity about something they've bought and are excited for, but that's what a forum is all about. People's opinions, good and bad.

I personally am disappointed in Google because they can just never seem to get it right.
The only phones I've ever had problems with are the Pixel 2 and Pixel 3.
Google's QC is just not there.

I'm sure some of you will get it, have zero problems and love it, and I hope that's the case as it should be when dropping this amount of money on a new product.
But in reality, I've just lost complete trust in Google now.

Because:
1. The tech youtubers are still going gaga over anything Pixel regardless
2. They are not a hardware company. They’re an advertising company. The Pixel is just a money grab, and surprisingly many keep falling for it.

Lol, you let yourself down with the bolded garbage.

Nothing about it is a money grab. If that was the case then no one would be using a Pixel phone and the Pixel line would end up the way of the Essential phone.

As it stands though, virtually every tech reviewer uses a Pixel 3 because it had the best camera. And most of us who frequent this alternative section also used a Pixel (3, or the 3a), because we've tried other devices with all the bells and whistles yet still keep going back to the Pixel. And there's a reason for that.

Just because tech reviewers are going gaga doesn't mean you need to feel threatened about what phone you chose to use. 🙂

I agree, if the phone is poop, then it's poop, and I'll cancel my order. But will give it till end day tomorrow, after reviews, and maybe an official Google response on the face unlock issue.

You’re the one who asked why Google can release these things every year with issues.
I answered it, and you proved my point. If people like you keep supporting Google regardless how buggy their phones are, why should Google do anything different nor improve things? 🤷

No. You answered nothing.
I called you out on your statement of them being a 'cash grab' which has nothing to do with me posting about the phone having early issues.
There is nothing stopping early issues being remedied with a software update.

Also, I don't have a Pixel 4 on order so 'people like me' supporting Google doesn't apply.

There's no doubt it, the Pixel line has had many issues and annoyances. I went through 4 2XL I think it was before getting one trouble free. But even despite that, I've still found them great devices to use.

So calling them a money grab and saying people keep falling for it is wayyyyy off. I keep falling for owning a phone I love using? OK then. Not surprised by these comments though, coming from someone who seems to like coming here to bash the Pixel.

I'll reserve judgement on the Pixel 4 until I've owned it and fully tested it out. If I like it, that will be no surprise to me. If I don't, I'll be honest and post my thoughts before returning it.

By "official reviews" do you mean the paid ones? Which I'm starting to suspect most on YouTube are any more 🙁 I've pretty much stopped watching them, especially the big names because most seem like an advertisement, and why not, YouTube and Google is nothing but an advertising platform.

I'm not sure about this phone, my on the fence level has been all over the place. I pulled up the pre order page a couple times and went meh. I've got one foot on the fence and the other off. Also recently my other two pixels have been a bit irritating lately, my 2 is pulling a windows 10 and trying to install an update and failing. Guess there is a switch in the developer options to prevent this, but not before it tried to install on my rooted system.

There was no "system update available, would you like to update?" Nope it just took it upon itself to do it. And this is a load. Even my s7e will prompt me or I have to go fishing.

Sometimes I just want to toss all my phones into the drawer and go back to alphanumeric pagers... But they'll find a way to slip ads into that too 😫
 
I don't think Google has really brought a strong contender to the table this year. There are some really silly omissions in this years Pixel and still asking iPhone prices for them is really pushing it. They may think a ultra wide lens is not important but customers do, which is why other flagships include it. Hell, even OnePlus has it. The battery on the regular 4 is ridiculously small, whereas the new iPhones are leading the battery game right now. The big forehead on the new Pixels does not look that great and the justification for it is a gimmick feature in my opinion. All that tech to just be able to wave your hand over the top of the phone to switch song tracks, ignore calls, or snooze alarms. Big whoop. Then there are other silly omissions like getting rid of unlimited full quality back up on Google Photos, not including a headphone adapter or pair of headphones in the box, etc. I am sure Google has beefed up the computational photography this year but from what I have seen so far it doesn't look like they are blowing away the competition. It is too bad because while I upgraded to a 11 Pro I really wanted to try out a android flagship again this year but the Pixel is just not worth it in my opinion, I don't like Samsung software, and OnePlus has a bad camera AGAIN. The 7T is the only one that is kind of tempting me but the camera isnt there.

Oh, and the video recording capability on the Pixel is still a joke.

I've only owned two Pixel phones; the 2 XL and 3 XL. I have my wife the Pixel 2 XL last year, and it's couple years old now. And honestly I can't recall any serious issues with it. And my wife, not a techie at all, likes it enough, no complaints.

I have the Pixel 3 XL, and besides mediocre battery life, really no major issues, except a bad charging port that's a bit flaky, started couple months ago. And a few monthly security updates this year made the phone laggy but then couple months later a good update fixed it and made the phone buttery smooth again.

Are these Pixel phones I had, perfect? Heck no. But we're they broken or major issues causing them unusable? No.

The cameras have been amazing. And stock Android smooth and fluid.

Why do people keep saying the big forehead is only there because of a gimmick? Yes, changing tracks with your hand is a bit gimmicky but the biggest use of it is the face unlock that's replacing the rear FPS. Or does that completely slip people's minds?

Right? Google’s choice was either a notch or a forehead for face unlock. Apple went with the notch and Google went with the forehead. But people are fine with excusing Apple’s dated notch. Both phones look out of place in 2019, but it’s really not that big of a deal.

Well I -- and maybe I'm the only one -- am anxiously awaiting my Pixel 4. I've had my S8 for two years now, and this is the first device that I've felt is really worth upgrading to. (I bought and returned Pixel 3 last year, clinging to my S8 for another year.) The only other device I've considered recently is the S10e, but I'd really like to move on from Samsung. I don't like the changes brought with One UI. The only thing I'm really disappointed about is the lack of an ultrawide lens.

If there are some glaring issues that make the Pixel 4 an unworthy successor to my S8, I'll probably just hang onto my S8 and see what Google does next year with the 4a. I see a lot of people here naming OnePlus as a better option than Pixel 4. OnePlus software is great, but the device is a behemoth -- far too large and heavy for a smartphone, IMO. If OnePlus would make a smaller device I'd be the first in line to purchase it!

I bought black. It's going in a Spigen case anyway, so the back won't be seen.

The video recording capabilities are the deal breaker for me personally. I record a ton of video and the Pixel line just falls short compared to what I can get on just about all of the competition.

I feel zero pull towards the Pixel 4 which is a first for me. My Android phones have almost exclusively been from Google and the Pixel is just too much of a compromise in a few key areas for me to consider it (video, storage, battery). I had been leaning a bit towards picking up a OnePlus 7T but I’m not a fan of the company and while the lower price is great, I’d miss wireless charging and verified water/dust resistance.

I'm itching to upgrade my Pixel 3XL and I can’t believe it, but I’m honestly considering giving a Note 10+ a go for my yearly Android purchase. Samsung is still offering $400 trade for the 3XL vs. the measly $295 Google is offering.

Ugh...wish Google finally got their **** together this year...🙁

I still lean to ineptitude, but does anyone think Google is saving some firepower for next year when IPhone is rumored to be getting an overhaul?

Is Face unlock an issue? I have heard it will work with your eyes closed...but that doesn't bother me. If I'm dead and someone is trying to get into my phone...well...i'm dead.... :-(
I don't have anyone in my life that would need to wait until i'm sleeping to unlock my phone.
My significant other and I have the passwords to all of each others important stuff anyway...no secrets between us.

Most reviews i have seen love Face Unlock and say it works as advertised except for one person.
So i will wait until I have the P4 in my hands in a couple days and see for myself.

But as you said...if the phone is poop...then it is poop...i'll send it back.

But we go through this in every new phone thread....
so many are here to say something negative and will move on once the phone is released.
The new iPhone releases are especially bad in that aspect.
It is the nature of the beast on an internet forum.

wait...isn't this almost word for word what you said about the Pixel 3 last year? Didn't you pretty much trash the Pixel 3 only get it and really enjoy it?
