Phones Google Pixel 8/8 Pro

Aren’t they using different screen technologies though that’s my understanding of the situation.

There is no bad choice. There is no better value than what you prefer. You can find deals that will make the extra cost of the 8 Pro less painful.

I was kind of disappointed that the Pro didn’t have my actual real world battery life over the standard model, but I’m guessing those different screens make a big difference in this area. Have they fixed the overheating issues with the new silicon.

Possibly, but is it worth the $300 extra dollars? It wouldn't be if you had a $325 discount. At that point you could get the 8 Pro for $25 less than the Pixel 8. The differences between the screen panels is minimal. One has 2000 nits brightness and the other is 2400 nits. Both panels offer 120Hz refresh rate while the 8 Pro can drop down to 1Hz for Always On Display, something I don't use.

For the user the only major difference is the screen size. The actual difference is that the Pixel 8 Pro battery life would be worse if it didn't have this more power efficient LTPO panel. And in fact the Pixel 8 battery life is not good since Google prioritized cost savings. So you are kind of looking at it the wrong way around, it's not a question of "who needs the better 8 Pro display" and more a question of "why did Google increase the price of the regular 8 by 100 bucks yet still skimped on the hardware". After all this is a $700 phone and far from budget phones like the a series.

The 8 Pro clearly has the better hardware all around if you can get it on a sale. Whether it is worth the extra cash depends on how inconvenienced you'll be when your phone battery runs out when you're out or if you won't get that zoom lens shot with low enough noise to look good due to the missing camera. And so on.

Keep in mind that Pixel 8 prices don't fall the same way, the Pro line sees steeper price cuts. The past weeks the 7 Pro was probably the best deal within the entire lineup for around $600 if you don't mind the curved display. Which I do, so to me and many users the 7 Pro is unfortunately dead. Otherwise with the 7 Pro prices falling further over the next months and settling around the usual $530-$560 for short sales that price can't be beat.

Compared to that the 8 Pro will keep looking overpriced for another 12 months before that also settles somewhere at $600 at which point it will be a great deal especially with the long update support making it more feasible to buy an older flagship. The 7 Pro is still restricted by the shorter time, it won't get Android 17 in Sept/Oct 2026 anymore and that is already less than 3 years away.

Fixed is a bit strong of a word. They did fix it but it is still an Exynos chip at it's core.

What I am saying is that it is improved to the point it is no longer an issue but improvement can still be made.

Overheating, throttling are greatly improved. Haven't had issues with either in several months now.

I think it will be a good match. The s23+ is a great phone.

I think the Pixel 8 Pro is a better phone overall but a lot of that is subjective and comes down a lot if you like Pixel UI over OneUI. The cameras are better on the Pro, the screen is slightly better, I prefer the Pixel design, you get more ram.

On the other hand on the s23+ you have 8 gen 2 which is a little faster and more efficient than the Tensor G3.

It will be interesting to see your take and impressions. If you keep both, or keep only one there isn't a bad choice but just because of the slightly higher specs and longer software support would nudge me towards the Pixel.

Look forward to hearing what you think.

Thats a good price! It will be interesting to read your thoughts. You get double the space with the S23+ but get more ram with the P8P. I think they are so close in performance and everything that you won't notice much difference at all in most use cases.
It will be interesting to see how the latest Pixels compare to the latest Galaxy phones next month when the Galaxy S24 line up is released.

Once Google Private Space comes on the scene (may not appear til A15), it might be enough to drag me away from S23 hardware hehe

Honestly don't think S24 will push the envelope much beyond now (and this iteration of Google Tensor may catch up a bit via software updates in the interim).

Plus, JR Raphael has been chiseling away at me to chug Google Pixel Kool-Aid for ages 😉

I ran the S23+ w/o animation and extras until last week. Once that stuff was turned on and I added Goodlock cool stuff, a lot of things were noticeably slower (fingerprint recognition, app switching, accessing Secure Folder, ...).

Does anyone know how to remove the icon on the right?

I haven't used themed icons in a while as I hated the fact there were so many (like Facebook) that hadn't been updated.

To my surprise, most of my home screen apps are now themed! Loads of them in fact. Including ones I wouldn't expect, like the MyGP app for my medication prescriptions etc.

I've switched it up and gone for a themed app home screen to take advantage of this new discovery. 😅

What the hell is up with the internet speeds of the 8 Pro?
I upgraded my internet recently to 900MBPS. I've been using my iPhone pretty much exclusively over my Pixel last few weeks but decided to sim swap and notice I am having issues with things taking ages to load on pixel.

I've just done an internet speed test and the iPhone is reaching 500mbps and the pixel...? 40mbps.
I've googled it and all I am seeing is people with the same issue but the work arounds people suggest don't work for me.

Is it a known thing that these phone have crap modems or something? Never noticed before but having used my iPhone for so long now and then full time moved back to pixel everything is taking an age and it shouldn't be with how fast my internet is!

No issues with my Verizon FiOS and the Pixel handling the same as my iPhone..maybe reset network connections and repair ?

Tried all this. Hasn't done anything.
It's weird because my friend has an 8 Pro and he doesn't have any problems when running speed tests either.
I'd understand being on the other side of the house, but I'm right next to the router and getting less than a tenth of the speed.

Will troubleshoot a bit more after work and see if I can sort it.
