Google is rolling out Gemini integration for its Chrome browser on iPhone and iPad, a move that brings AI feature parity with its web and desktop versions.

Chrome-Feature-22.jpg

The company teased built-in Gemini in Chrome for iOS in September, and the feature is now rolling out gradually across the United States. For Gemini to work in Chrome, you'll need version 143. When you've updated, make sure you're signed into your account, the browser language is set to English, and the app isn't in Incognito mode.

If all the above conditions are met, the Google Lens logo on the left-hand side of the address bar will change to a Gemini icon. Tapping the icon shows options for two "Page tools" that let Gemini search your screen or for you to ask the chatbot a question.

The Gemini interface also includes shortcuts to do things like summarize the current webpage or create a FAQ about a topic. Other sample queries include asking Gemini to reframe complex topics in alternative ways, quiz you on material you're learning, adapt recipes to specific dietary requirements, or contrast options and offer tailored recommendations based on your preferences. Gemini's responses to queries appear in an overlay that floats on top of the webpage.

Chrome 143 for iOS also adds biometric checkout support, new Chrome tips on the New Tab Page, and general stability improvements.

Since the last update, CHROME shows new windows (side-by-side) which is useless. And the tab close is moved from the top to the bottom of the winodw. And to open a link in a new window is now the 4th option in the drop-down menu; buried under other useless crap.

Exremely annoying.

Me, who seems to be part of up to 20% of iPhone users. Remember, not everyone uses a Mac and I like having the continuity of Chrome on all my devices. Also Gemini is better than anything Apple has...
According to a lot of people on this forum, Siri is great and Apple have been really clever and strategic in waiting to role out their AI solutions (just don’t mention what was promised at WWDC 2024).

Presumably the same people would’ve thought that Napoleon was being deliberately strategic when he lost the battle at Waterloo.

And yes, Gemini is amazing but I’m happy to keep it in its own app for the moment.

It is sort of funny to watch folks pivot off of Apple being behind and ineffective in this space, over to "this is a grand plan by Apple!" ... "4D chess from Tim Cook!" ... "another masterful strategy execution from Apple".

I know that Google mines our data, but so far, it seems they are doing so responsibly (not much different from Apple). As a user of Apple products since 2002 and owner of Apple shares since 2005, I can feel the great sucking sound of the Google eco system..... I cannot find any product that they make that is not better than Apple's equivalent (well, laptops I guess).

Years of cautious computing, staying educated on privacy, security and local backups to my own network has served me well. Googles early years were responsible and focused on the greater advancement of search.

But that was then and this is now. A vastly different company, the big G has made moves that raise concern.

On the topic of AI, amongst the pros and cons the possibility of harm and of privacy compromises are but two very real concerns. While the pros are compelling, it's the cons that put me off.

History reveals there's a vast number of users that throw caution to the wind and let down their guard out of convenience, free, or other aspects that lure them in. Google has built a billion dollar business off the backs of uninformed or careless users.

I'm letting those people be the testers and I will continue to sit back and watch.

In another news, Apple Intelligence and Siri AI will be run on Safari.... oh wait....

Is it me or is all of this AI functionality going way to far and becoming annoying! I am starting to think Apple is not behind but they are ahead! Nobody wants 100 backseat drivers for every character they type or every gesture!

Context is important. Siri is great in many ways, just not in the "generative AI" area yet. That will be different a year from now.

Ha, keep dreaming. Apple doesn't harvest user data for profit.

It's not going too* far. This is just the beginning of a new AI-powered world. If you follow any AI news (The Nvidia Podcast is great!), you'll know that AI is infusing itself into every facet of the world. It's not going away. Learn to embrace it, just not blindly like so many people do with using Google products and services.

I do not know guys, I'm completely staying away of any Google products in my personal use.
work it is work and personal is personal.

Also I'm interested what are you doing with gemini?

I’m studying it closely while taking a wait and see approach before I embrace using it. Currently the cons outweigh the pros, so for my purposes I’m better off without it.

Anything is possible, so I’ll reserve the right to change my mind if suddenly it becomes trustworthy, effective and clearly beneficial.

Nice to have this feature. But would like for it to work in Incognito too and without the need for signing in to the account.

With all due respect, I find Siri appalling on a daily basis. Its capabilities are woefully limited & since a few years after its launch - when it was vaguely cool - it’s been one of the weakest parts of the iPhone experience.
