As a heavy Siri user, I've been using Google's voice search all day and I'm pretty impressed. I've always defended Siri but this blows it out of the water for simpler requests (not maps/reminder/alarm/etc related).

Agreed. Its very fast to!

...erm not really? Got my friends GS2 in my hand running it, nowhere near as smooth. Don't get me wrong, Google Now is awesome, but the App itself has got nothing on the iOS version.

At the end of the day, I don't want Google knowing everything about me. Just by having an Android phone, you're telling Google everything about you. I'll stick to my iPhone, thanks.

Lol the gs2? Do you know how old that is?

It speaks faster too! LOL
Anyways I think it's only a search tool. I primarily use Siri to do stuff with the phone, like opening apps, setting alarms and touch less texting. For conversions Google is faster and for online searches Google is also faster. Cool to have both.

Your desperation is evident - you are throwing so many different arguments around, just hoping that one sticks. Unfortunately, you just don't make sense.

Competitors don't have to perform identical tasks.

Identical? No. But very close. HOW they perform the tasks can vary widely, but when it comes to software, if they don't perform essentially the same functions, they don't really compete. Both Calculator and Excel can solve mathematical equations. They don't compete, though.

The only thing Siri has going for it, and it's still important, is integration with the phone's functions. But remember, that's an artificial limitation imposed by Apple. If Apple allowed this Google service access to the phone's functions, then Siri would be in big trouble.

The "artificial limitation" you mention is the fact that Siri is a multi-functional capability built into the OS, and Google's search app is just an app for searching the internet by voice. Yes, if Google were coding iOS, things would be different. And if wishes were horses....

The reason people are saying it's a competitor is because it's clear Google's voice engine is better/faster.

Huh? So if BMW's Voice Control in my car has better voice recognition than Siri AND Google search, is it now a Siri competitor, too? Nonsense. The quality of voice recognition of any software has nothing to do with defining the app's competitors.

You really don't think it's a competitor? Really? Considering that Google's service controls functions on Android, you don't think anyone is comparing these services?

Again, you're all over the place. Now you are comparing Android functionality to Siri. Which is it - the Google iOS app competes with Siri, or Android's functions compete with Siri?? Pick a topic and stick with it.

It may not be directly comparable on the iPhone, ...

So we agree :)

Stop being obtuse.

oh, okay.

really? really?

Gotta give Google credit here. I asked it "Why is Mitt Romney such an *sshole" and it brought up a paid ad for his website, but also sites like "Why is MR such a phony" and "mittromneyisatool.com".

I tried the same question with Siri and it responded with "Now, now". LAME!

Siri, actually had a good response to your ignorance and hatred.

Anyway, why not ask a question with actual substance...like 'Why did the Obama administration blatantly lie and misinform the world about what happened in Benghazi?' As it was public information that this was a long-planned terrorist attack on the anniversary of 9/11 and was NOT about a video.

Or...

'How much debt has incurred under the Obama administration?' and follow up with...'Why can't Jon Stewart tell his sheep the truth about the difference of Clinton's DEBT and DEFICIT?'

Or...

'Which political party presided over congress and the 2007 to 2011 federal budgets and trillions in deficits?'

Try those to start...and please inform yourself better about the opposition. Wikipedia does not count.

oh god here comes all the political ****.

I asked the same thing to both apps:

Siri told me that Siri is not supported in my country (weird, it seems that it gives me the same answer to all questions!)

And Google Voice worked properly!

There are many areas where Google gives a lot more detailed answers too, like film casts, biographical information, discographies etc. so you're being quite selective.

LOL, I figured somebody would challenge me.

OK, here we go:

For the rest of this, GS = Google Voice Search, SR = Siri

"Show me the cast of the original star wars movie"
GS = just did a web search
SR = showed me all of the star wars movies in a cute movie themed list and you could touch each one to get the cast and info

"Show me the cast of saving private ryan"
GS = just did a web search
SR = showed me a movie posterish looking card with all of the movie info

"Who was John F. Kennedy"
GS = Showed me a nice info card about him and said a few facts
SR = Showed me an info card from WolframAlpha

"show me the Beatles discography"
Neither one of them understood what I wanted and just did web searches, I finally just said "Beatles discography"

GS = Showed me a cool scrolling horizontal list of the Beatles albums.
SR = brought up a WolframAlpha card with the info

"who won the lakers game last night?"
GS = told me who won (The Mavs dangit!) and showed web results
SR = told me who won and the final score including a cool looking scoreboard card with the score by quarter

"when do the Lakers play their next game?"
GS = told me the answer and showed web results
SR = told me and showed a nice card that showed the teams records and what channels were showing the game

"Show me the Lakers roster"
GS = did a web search that showed an ESPN short list of players that was mostly inaccurate
SR = showed me a card with all of the players and their picture, number, height, weight etc...

"what is Kobe Bryant's scoring average?
GS = Just did a web search
SR = told me his average and showed me a card with all of his stats on it

"How many calories are in a Big Mac?"
GS = did a web search (the first listing did show the calorie count below it)
SR = showed me a WolframAlpha card with the details

Shall I go on? :D

Don't get me wrong, I think Google's voice search is really impressive. Much better than Siri at Google searching, but I feel so far like Siri is still better at answering many info requests that don't involve OS integration.

Well guess what...

The rest of the android system works this well ... Particularly the S3 ... They can't match the 10" iPad, but hold on... Is that the imminent launch of the Nexus 10 I hear?

Great if you're in the states... It doesn't work for 90% of what you want outside the U.S.

Since I have no way of knowing, I'll take your word for it. The next time I'm in Europe, I'll have to put Siri to the test and see.

No it is 100% artificial limitation. Apple cheats so it creates these bs limitation knowing the user can not really switch.

If Apple made siri for Android there is nothing stoping it from doing everything Google Now can do on Android. Google does not block those actions.

Android if you do not like the Dialer for example you can replace it with your own.

I just tried it on both and Google pulled it up instantly with photos and a horizontal scrolling thumbnail list of all the actors in the movie. Litterally 2 seconds if that.

Siri had a hard time and finally timed out.

In the end, they are competing apps and for me with quite a bit of overlap. If it is simply built in phone functions like email dictation and dialing friends or launching an app, sure, I'll use Siri. however, I did quite a few web searches for actual Information and Google crushed Siri in terms of speed and what it brought back. Google will be my goto app for those. All you have to do is leaving running in the background and there's no launch delay.

I asked both for Kobe Bryant's stats and again, Google crushed Siri. Siri brought up a nice looking single card with minimal information.

Google brought up a web search that instantly showed just about every stat for the season and post season and stats on him personally. Results are far more thorough and useful.

----------

Last try...I asked both: When is trick or treat in Dublin, Ohio?

Google, pulled up a web search with perfect results directly from the local site and had everything I needed including their embedded movie.

Siri was about to let my kids down for the biggest disappointment this year.

It's not speaking the answers back to me like in the video.

Seems Apple may have forced them to remove that functionality.

EDIT: I am mistaken. Spoken answers only work for English (US) and not English (UK) or French. I can't confirm if spoken responses work for any other languages, though.

...oh my, did you really say that? you just invented a false rumor. why? what data did you have that suggested apple forced them to remove it?

One thing I like about Android is its framework. Almost all functionality is tied to an app so anything can be replaced! Don't like how contacts are presented? Change it! Don't like the homescreen? Change it! The same goes for calendar, email, browser, and other functions.

You can download another email, calendar or browser on iOS but you cannot replace the default one.

Well... I just did the "show me the cast of saving private ryan" and Google did a web search and the first result is the imdb.com site and if you click on the link, you get the info of course. I did it 3 times and got the same. I finally just said "cast of saving private ryan" and got the result you did. I still like Siri's result better.

Your Kobe Bryant example is simply a web search on Google. Of course, if you start having to click on links to websites, then of course you will wind up with more information.

For simple web searches, Google is faster for sure. But I don't think the results are the same league quality wise as Siri is for the tests that I've done. As I use them both more, I may change my opinion. I'm not a blind fan of either platform. I just want a tool that works. I use Siri all the time for reminders and text messages etc... If Siri cant find what I'm looking for, I'll use Google.

Just to update since I tried a few more searches.
Try the following with whatever teams/players/actors are your favorite and make up your own mind which results are better.

What's Kobe Bryant's free throw percentage?
When is the first time the Lakers play the Celtics this year?
Show me the next 10 games the Lakers play
Who has the highest batting percentage in baseball?
Who's on the Lakers roster?
When is the Lakers next home game? (Google gave me their next game, which is away)
What movies has clint eastwood been in?
What was the last movie clint eastwood was in?
Did clint eastwood and justin timberlake do a movie together?
What movies has clint eastwood directed?

On my 3GS I asked Google 4 questions (weather, a Celsius conversion, how to spell Fahrenheit, and FedEx rates). Google nailed all 4. Siri, on my iPad, got the first, had to think about the second and finally gave me a list to choose from, had to think about it and finally provided Daniel Fahrenheit's biography for #3, and offered to search the web for #4. Sorry Apple, game, set, match for Google.

It still isn't conversational like Siri. With Siri, you can say "what is the weather here", and then "and how about New York", and it remembers the context. Google Now still requires distinct commands.

I'm guessing Apple will be able to solve their speed problems more quickly than Google can add AI, but we'll see. Good to have some competition to push the tech forward.
Google Now - on the latest Android devices and not iOS - predicts what information you'll need before you ask for it. Example: If you leave work it'll present your route home with traffic information, or if you receive an email about a package you're waiting for then it'll present the relevant data and tracking information. The AI is already there.

You should see a DR about getting that stick removed from your ass. It's only going to hurt more after Romney loses the election
