I've been following the e-book industry for some time now and all I have to say that paper books are going to be around for a long time. This is a different beast compared to say movies. Nothing beats holding a real book in your hands. And Google is going down the tubes.

one thing beats having a real book in your hands - thats having all of your books in one device that allows you to search, look up words and download a book instantly. ;)

I don't mind Google selling books because there is room for a lot vendors.

What I'm starting to chafe on is their total lack of regard for anything that resembles a good consumer UI.

Hopefully these will be in ePub format as well.

Sounds good to me. I'm glad ebooks are getting everyone's attention. It's going to take a lot to beat the Kindle ecosystem, IMHO. But I'm glad Apple and now Google are trying.

Google is being ridiculous. If it doesn't know what do do with it's money... then they should donate it to charity! I bet Apple is really pissed off with Google.

Google is starting to become SkyNet.

Oh, and Google, remember: "Don't be evil"

Ams.

iBooks, Google Editions, Adobe Editions, Kindle, ++++

I hate it. When I want a book, I have to check all of these places + more to see who has that book. Most often it is Amazon though, but their format often displays images poorly.

I can of course go directly to the publishers site and be directed to whatever solution they use. But it is still annoying...

Physical books are also annoying when you have to move, and they require bigger and bigger bookcases.

I'm weary of jumping into the ebook market because of the fragmentation that exists due to the DRM. I don't want to be locked in to one companies offerings and I don't want to have to use separate devices/apps to access all my books. Either get rid of DRM (it doesn't work anyway) or create a universal standard that all readers can utilize.

I've been considering this jump for quite some time, and as a result I stopped purchasing physical books. Paranoia over piracy hampers sales, I'm sure others are in the same boat as I am. Honestly, pirating books seems like the best option at this point because of their efforts to prevent it.

the book publishing industry is not very smart. they could cooperate and create a common standard, built their own reader similar to the kindle while at the same time allow apple, sony, amazon, google to sell their devices using the book industries standard. by this they would control the market. now the book industry is controlled by amazon and apple and google. the cunsumer loses because if you want to switch from apple to kindle you have to rebuy all books.

How is this any different than purchasing just about anything else?

Do you really want only one company selling e-books? One company producing phones? One company monopolizing any market?

Come on. My home is more apple-ized that that of many posters here (beyond all the usual hardware I was among the first ones to buy a bootlegged iPhone in Russia and an overpriced iPad from eBay in Switzerland); but the smirks towards Google in this thread are simply ridiculous.

I don't get it. What's that with Apple that makes people lose sight - I don't get it.

Why on earth would you care if "Apple is pissed off with Google"? By the way, they're both building a category - called "eBooks" market! It's good for both of them.

Monkey see, monkey do.

I didn't realize Steve Ballmer was Eric Schmidt's shadow mentor.

O.K now apple is starting to be a very annoying company.

Is like every move they make is a copy from other PRODUCTS.
They hire "GENIUSES" to copy other companies ideas.

Name one thing apple is fully credited for creating? Im not talking about improving like what the ydid with the cellphone or mp3 player.

I MEAN IN HOUSE INNOVATION/CREATION.

Fixed for you:rolleyes:

Fixed that for ya! ;)

Odd, I thought you actually needed a product in place to have officially entered a market.

I guess to be fair you should add "Apple started dreaming up the iPhone" to the timeline, which probably still puts it ahead of Google. ;)

Nothing beats holding a real book in your hands.

I remember when there was a time when people needed to print a photo to enjoy it. Or print a document to read it. Music and DVDs that use to take a bookcase now can fit in the palm of your hand with no disks to swap. Books will eventually all go digital at some point. It is just a matter of getting the software just right.

Oh please now..

Oh come on now - microsoft copies apple, apple copies X - google copies MS & apple, PLEASE PEOPLE whats wrong with CHOICES? kindle was first, why not say apple copied amazon? - so its not new, but alot of things are copied, look at the car market, WHO BENEFITS? CONSUMERS DO!

Please people, I love apple, I love google, I Hate (sometimes can tolerate) Microsoft... but all provide us with choices...

By the way funny FUNNY Signature though! :D:D:D

Competition is good -- more lawsuits for the lawyers and, pending the outcomes of said lawsuits, more choices for the end-users. ;)

What if we all got a free gigbit to our house? Then would Google be less evil? :p

i know i know

So much hate for google on this site. LOL.

SO much blind support - YES apple makes great products, (more concentration on the iphone then mac, but i digress) but google makes services easy for me too...

The market will dictate each companies decision, if google burns on this so be it - if apple is making themselves look like an ass for the iphone sdk and flash, like many say - let the market dictate it.
