So actually there was always a way to do "send as". Unlike this newly-announced feature, it allows you to select the address to send from for each message.

I've been using this approach for a while. Am I missing something in not switching to google sync?

Anybody know if there's a way to edit the phone number types at Google's end of things?
iOS has "iPhone" as a phone number type but this get changed to "mobile" on Google's side and I can't find a way to change it.

Yeah. I've had this for years with IMAP. Weird that it's a 'new feature". Also already have "sync" with calendars using Google Calendar. The CalDAV set up works with iCal and the iPhone. Enter an event and it's instantly available everywhere. On OS X, Fantastical is pretty awesome for this. That's why I laughed when Steve announced this at the WWDC. You can already do this. Use Apple's interfaces with Google's services is the best way to go. It's like the best of both worlds. I gave up on Apple's service offerings long ago.
