Apple is no longer the iPhone company, it’s a services company. Don’t hold your breath expecting 50GB of free iCloud storage because it ain’t gonna happen!
And if paying less than $12 a year - a few cups of coffee at Starbucks - for 50GB of iCloud storage is too much money, then you may want to shift your priorities ;)

Exactly HOW MANY subscriptions are people supposed to be expected to pay for on a regular basis??

that’s not the point. Apple‘s 5 GB came out when file sizes are small. The fact it has not updated the size in 8 years as file sizes doubled is why we get less and they bank their billions.

Fair point. 5GB is enough to keep some key settings and files synced as a bare minimum. But yeah, they're clearly keeping it small to force a purchase.

To be fair, that next 50GB tier is a whopping $11.88 per year, and the genuinely useful 200GB tier is $35.88/year. These are not horrible prices at all, and the $10/month tier is absolutely enormous.

I hate subscriptions as well, but at least this is an ongoing service as opposed to a piece of software that you have to rent to be able to continue using. "Software as a service" is bull---- in most cases, but I myself don't mind paying to have my files safely stored and reliably kept in sync. Seems like a different thing to me than some journalling app or whatever keeping your content hostage unless you keep funding their ongoing operational costs.

well video in hevc does get reecoded to h.264. So not everything gets uploaded at original quality. And any JPEGs or raw images in your photos gets recompressed. So it’s not a like iPhone users are getting a free 100% quality for everything.
