you're kidding, right?
The reason cross platform is important to Google is they know that their core customers don't spend money on anything so if they can leverage Apple's Platform that does generate money and actually sells games to use this on then they can claim success

3 years of no one using it. Most run away after seeing the hideous, annoying, repeated sign in prompts from Game Center. Execution matters.

Exactly, though I blamed the nasty skeumorphic green felt UI. lol

I don't know why Apple consistently under-delivers with network services: mobile me, ping, game center, iMessage, iCloud...

Seriously, there are enough 'cues' that it may be time to replace Eddie Cue.

:apple:

Shame the demo didn't work on stage.

Yeah that will really encourage developers to use it

Course it's easy to see what Google is really up to. They are trying to get developers to make more games, especially the really popular ones. And through that get more switchers.

Nice idea, if it works

I guess what I read a few days ago really is right. Google is basically building its own platform atop the iOS platform.
Google wants its platform to be ubiquitous. This obviously means that it has to support iOS too since it's a good chunk of the mobile market. Apple prefers to go with an "exclusive" approach, which has its own pros and cons.

Anyway competition is good and if allowed to happen customers will decide which platform is better.

Cross - Platform is a big big deal. It doesn't matter that its a copy of gamecenter. The fact that these things connect across both the iOS and Android ecosystem is a game changer in a very good way. The issue is that this is counter to everything apple has been about so unsure how they'd respond. One of many reasons apple stock took a beating today.

Google nailed it with this plus the Spotify clone. iRadio is meant not to cannibalize iTunes. But with disk space issues and multi-device issues, I don't see us buying music individually anymore in the distant future. The iRadio/iTunes model is flawed.

I see an change in the App Store T&C coming that makes any game that connects to anything other than game centre or an apple only server non-admissable..

Only said in legalese of course...

or is it covered by the "an app must not duplicate a basic iOS function" part of the T&C ?

Claim success? If people respond to this and Google happens to make money, wouldn't that be the definition of success? Wouldn't be a claim.

no, because the back end for IAP and multi-player is run on AWS for most games

Ultimately Google doesn't care what device you use, as long as they can observe your online activities and sell ads targeted to you.

Developers know that "it works on my machine"!

"Claim" success?

If the platform is adopted - it's a success. What do you mean "claim" ?

their translation service seems pretty neat unlike apple who tells their devs to translate but gives them no tools to do so / help them

Apple has a number of tools and features in their frameworks to help making internationalized apps. They just don't offer a translation service. They want high quality translations, not machine-generated ones. And since there were already plenty of good translation services available, why create another one?

Thanks Google for doing something for the people, giving us cross platform syncing :) Apple wouldn't do THAT in a million years. Google has a refreshing outlook sometimes :)

Yes, I'm sure Dear Benevolent Google is doing this purely out of the goodness of their hearts, out of genuine care for their products users.

The service presented is not a machine-generated one. The service is done for a fee by translation companies by humans.

This is good news for several reasons.

1. If you got friends who have Android phones, you can now play multiplayer together.

2. This is going to make Apple continue to improve Game Center or risk falling behind.

You would think with the success of XBL and that really being the golden model that they would have effectively launched XBL for Window phones and tablets.

XBL on Windows phones sucks so much, really wish it was as awesome as my Xbox 360.

you know, I can't help feeling Google is copying everything Apple does.

As much as I'd like to say "they hate Apple", they don't show it, since all these apps start coming out for IOS, but only "AFTER" Apple has eg Game Centre.

What? Game Center? It wasn't even a new idea when Apple did it for iOS.

I'd say Google is late to the game (pardon the pun), but they're not copying anything that hasn't already been copied a thousand times before by a thousand other people.

On another topic, I hate it when a company implements a nice service seen elsewhere, and everyone starts screaming about copying. I don't care who copied who. I want variety.
