I actually agree with you^^. However my post was referring to the icons. Not the actual look of the apps.

No tiles please. Apple is better than that.

My thoughts exactly. Google Maps looks beautiful I think. Very simple, unobtrusive. I trust Jony Ive. The guy is freakin' Knighted because of his design sense. I think he'll do fine.

This comment literally made me laugh out loud.

yeah. the new google+ , google play, gmail etc. look very flat and i love 'em, if apple brings out something like that then i'll make sure i'll update as soon as possible.

yeah man, those apps have a flat look and everyone loves them. the new flat iOS will be beautiful. you can never satisfy people, especially when it's apple trying to do something new.

haha...agreed. most of the times when apple is about to bring something new, about 60-70% people say bad things about it, and at the end, apple brings out a great product.

As was mentioned Apple IOS already has flatness all over to give you some idea of what they are capable of bringing i.e. app store/ itunes podcast player etc. All the flat they are currently doing is very nice so whats all the hubbub about?

I see a lot of people are confusing the use of flat elements with UI design. The use of flat elements is only a part of design. While the Google+, Gmail, and other Google apps are using flat elements, what makes them good apps is their interface design. The type of gradients they use has little to do with it being a good design. Utilizing gestures, slide out menus, etc is what makes them useful. This is what Apple needs to focus on, not what the icons look like.

This could very well be what Apple is focusing on. We don't know. Because the rumors obsessed so much over the word "flat" everyone is focusing on that. The Bloomberg article did say that Ive was working on an overhaul of the mail and calendar apps, but they might not be finished in time for iOS 7.

this whole notion that going flat is going to look bad is ridiculous. So far, every implementation of the flat UI in software has been a hit. I'm just mad that apple didn't start the trend. I'm used to Apple being the one to lead trends...

Take a look at Tim Green's article on the rumoured design of iOS 7. He makes an interesting argument about the recent trend towards flat design, and how Apple could respond. He only provides a one image example, but it looks way better than the Metro influenced ultra flat tiles that have been appearing of late.

Flat design = the new web 2.0

CEO's and execs are going to be asking for flat design but they don't know wtf that means. The term is actually pretty dumb. By flat design do they mean COLOR and vectors???

I prefer that minimal look but I definitely don't see it as flat.

I've tried using Google Maps today.. the cartoonish-flat style is really terrible looking compared to Apple Maps.

Dude, the felt park texture in Apple Maps looks like it was ripped straight from South Park. They also copied the lack of curves. You just get polygon lakes in Apple maps.

enough with the anti flat crap, have you downloaded google now, gmail or google maps? everyone is taking that route, but if apple makes it sure will suck eh? you can never please people!

Uh, yes it does.

Have you even SEEN Google's new "designs"? They're boring, uninspired, and terrible. The last thing people need to do is copy Google's lazy design methods.

I have and they're gorgeous. Google+ and Google Now on iOS are nicer than any app Apple has put out.

If by "boring and uninspired" you mean they don't resemble a poker table or a leather bound portfolio, then sure.

Nobody is hitting what I think is the best thing that distinguishes Google flat designs and Apple's skeuomorphism.

Google's apps look -professional-.

If by "professional", you mean "look like they spent two seconds in Paintbrush and called it a day", then sure.

It's ugly rectangles and... that's it. Hardly anything to be proud of.

If that's professional, then I don't want it anywhere near iOS.

You think Skeuomorphism looks professional instead?

It looks like it's made for people who are trying too hard to be "cool".

you must be looking at some ugly custom rom or something because the default looks amazing, clean and simple

Reminders is a good design.

iPad Calendar is a good design.

iBooks is a good design.

Plain old rectangles and bland colours is not good design. It's borrrrring. Don't want it.

I think that Apple won't make the mistakes that Google did, though. They'll "simplify" it but not make it boring, bland, and colourless.

(Just as long as they don't take away iBooks or Calendar. I use those because they look good - I mean, look at Google calendar. It's just... there.)

lol "Look at Google calendar. It's just... there"

I wouldn't say its THAT ugly, but you have somewhat of a point.

Its a ton more functional though. It looks at any appointments you have for that day, communicates with Google Maps, and shoots you a reminder saying "Hey, you may want to leave now. If you leave any later with this traffic you'll be late."

The People app that I use so much on my iPhone? Garbage.

The Google Contacts app is a design marvel when compared to the iOS implementation.

I also wouldn't exactly say the Google Books app is ugly.
