They claim the following but it’s Google we’re talking about here:
“As always, your data in Google Photos is never used for ads and protected with our industry-leading security measures. To help us improve Ask Photos, queries may be reviewed by humans, but only after being disconnected from your Google Account to protect your privacy.”

Source: https://blog.google/products/photos/google-ask-photos-early-access“disconnected”
You prefer to have Google have access, search and catalogue all of your photo's?

The information in your photos can be deeply personal, and we take the responsibility of protecting it very seriously. And people will not review your conversations and personal data in Ask Photos, except in rare cases to address abuse or harm

How do they not search and catalogue your 'deeply personal photos' if they don’t review the conversations and photos. And who gave them permission to listen to our conversations in our videos on the camera roll in the first place?
Yeah the bottom line is I don’t want Google in my s—-. Apple is far from perfect but oh my god I am glad there is an alternative to Google as an ecosystem to be immersed in. Just so happens I think it’s the superior one too.

When everything goes back to their servers where they train on your personal data, they are going to make sure they have enough processing power.

The only thing they (ahem) promise is that it won’t be used for ads. But they will keep it secure (from competitors).
Normally the way it works is that a promise is a promise until it's not a promise.

Cool feature, the things Apple has to offer are nice - but an improved AI search would be really cool, but it will take years for Apple to implement - sorry til this OpenAI feature runs on an iPhone

Just had a closer look at the Pixel 9 and the iPhone is dust.

Calling all those things „Apple Intelligence“ my be the worst move since Apple Intelligence su**s when compared to the AI of the Pixel 9.

Gemini Nano that runs on the Pixel 9 with 12GB is a functionality the iP16 will never achieve since it is lacking the 12GB

OMG Timmy, maybe you finally did it - looking forward to the sales numbers …

Btw: Google established a new service to make money by offering a payed AI pro features service while Apple still fights the EU over highway robbery in the AppStore.

AND all those AI also works in the EU - of course it does. No geoblocking

Or until it’s broken. But in Googles case (which is the exact same as Meta) is that, make all the promises you want, because we have a different definition for the word.

Google/Meta defn: Promise - Misleading or deceptive conduct is when a business makes claims or representations that are likely to create a false impression in consumers.

Until Google falsely flags your account for CSAM and wipes out your entire account, purchases, etc without any way to appeal or recover. No thanks.
Yes they'd have control of cloud stores but are they legally allowed to remove stuff actually on your drive?

Every, and I do mean EVERY business does that.
EVERY. SINGLE. ONE.

Yes, under these conditions.
If we reasonably believe that any of your content (1) breaches these terms, service-specific additional terms or policies, (2) violates applicable law, or (3) could harm our users, third parties, or Google, then we reserve the right to take down some or all of that content

And of course they only know this because they search your content.

EVERY. SINGLE. ONE.
And I thought I was cynical. But I disagree with you. Generalisations are rarely correct for all circumstances. Most businesses try and do the right thing. Google & Meta are the complete opposite.

Sure, if handing over all your data over to Google sounds like a good idea
Ahh - come on, this is the last argument hardcore Apple fans have. And the next thing to argue about is of course "is Google lying about privacy" when it says:

The information in your photos can be deeply personal, and we take the responsibility of protecting it very seriously. Your personal data in Google Photos is never used for ads. And people will not review your conversations and personal data in Ask Photos, except in rare cases to address abuse or harm. We also don't train any generative AI product outside of Google Photos on this personal data, including other Gemini models and products. As always, all your data in Google Photos is protected with our industry-leading security measures.

Which is not very different from what Apple says or does - but Apple always tells the truth and doesn't implement things like CSAM.

This is just a single feature that is nice and there should be a method to enable or disable it. But I own several thousands of photos and an enhanced search functionality would be very welcome.

Apple still doesn't understand what AI really is and what new possibilities this technology creates. This may be the reason why Apple calls it "Apple Intelligence" 🤮.

This is easily done and wouldn't be a problem for Apple to add in an upcoming update. But they better be clear about the ToC and it better be opt-in.

First they use an Image-to-Text AI that processes all of your images and describes each of them in detail with an entire paragraph.
Then your search query goes into a LLM such as the GPT engine.
And boom. Some images are returned.

Now, do the descriptions go on the Google servers or do they stay on your device all the time?
What if the AI model confusingly sees a d**k pick when it's just a weird angle of parsnips ?
Or worse, what if Google knows you've taken a real d**k pic ?
But then again, if your photos are already in the Cloud, it just makes them easier to search for you (and also easier for Google to search for them 😉).

One thing is sure, even though I don't have anything to hide, Google is a company I distrust entirely. I've been a Google Ads manager for a few weeks and it scared me to see all the data they could accumulate on users through all their "free" services.

Why is it hard to understand, consumer/data is google’s product. The end user is their product, and companies pay more for data. There are no free lunches.

So many things wrong here.
1). Apple doesn’t have CSAM.
2). Google say they won’t review your data unless it finds something you shouldn’t have. How do they know this if they don’t review it.
3). Apple Intelligence is just the term they use to have contextual information, held on device. It’s not about giving your data to advertisers. It’s not hard to understand. Or apparently it is…. But if you want to be the product, that’s up to you. You do you.

Personally I have 10’s of thousands of images in my Lightroom library, keyworded, indexed in task type and dated. It does fine.

Exactly. I didn't completely understand the quote "If it's free, YOU are the product" until I've managed a Google Ads account a few years ago.

That's also when I decided to switch to DuckDuckGo, use privacy tabs, etc. You leave trails everywhere on the Internet, and Google has most of them.

You forgot about Apples CSAM efforts? For gods sake CSAM was canceled - partial, image filters for "sensitive content" are available for e.g. Messages.
And I guess Apples CSAM can be brought back to live - so no one is safe. Any government can jump in and instruct Apple to do so.

2). Google say they won’t review your data unless it finds something you shouldn’t have. How do they know this if they don’t review it.
No so hard to understand. One thing is a machine (AI) filter and if the filter says "possible child abuse", they will review it. Very similar to the plans Apple had.

"Apple Intelligence" is Apples attempt to bulls**t its customers by turning the term "Artificial Intelligence" upside down.

Personally I have 10’s of thousands of images in my Lightroom library, keyworded, indexed in task type and dated. It does fine.
But it could do better, couldn't it? And you're in the position of someone who invests lots of works, tagging, indexing - and so one. Those are dumb tasks a tool could do better and faster.

And of course it is possible for (depending on the tags you have) to show a customer "all pictures of brides on the beach at night" - but I guess you understand where this leads to.

It is the future and no one is going to stop it. No matter if a bunch of people tell you that "no one needs this".

As you said. It was cancelled, finally last year. But as was mentioned, Google are still implementing their own version. You endorse this?

And it wasn't similar at all. Apples version required a comparison of a hash given to them by law enforcement. No one was looking at the actual images. As Google have said, they will have actual people reviewing the data (or images) and listening to conversations. This was completely against the Apple style. But please justify Googles invasion into privacy any way you like.

Apple Intelligence (I’m not a fan of the name btw) is about the way it’s being used on device. Sure, ChatGPT is a great tool. Apple also use ChatGPT, but when used through Apple, it has your personal data stripped out of it. Many people lean into Apple for the privacy features. For what it’s worth, I have Google signed out of my browser when searching although I’m sure with cookies and IP addresses, they know exactly what I search.

I really like the way Marques Brownlee termed it. Apple Intelligence is about using AI as a feature, not a product.

But it could do better, couldn't it? And you're in the position of someone who invests lots of works, tagging, indexing - and so one. Those are dumb tasks a tool could do better and faster.

I 100% acknowledge benefits of elements of facial recognition, or smart tagging of an image. But I can assure you, allowing Google to take an image of a wedding couple or a studio or nude portrait is not an ethical thing to do. Can you imagine where that could lead? No, I prefer to tag images and leave them on my NAS & Backups for privacy reasons, over security of the cloud. My clients expect it.

It is the future and no one is going to stop it. No matter if a bunch of people tell you that "no one needs this".
I'm not suggesting they do. I’m just not advocating Google or Metas method of dealing with privacy.

That is not the point, yeah there is Apple iCloud vs Google Cloud.

But the major point is that a smartphone needs a deep AI integration like the Pixel/Android has, to reach a comparable usability.
Apple still has nothing and it needs to integrate OpenAI, Gemini or Metas version. I would call this really a new device category, more like an AIphone compared to a Smartphone.

It is shocking to see how far the iPhone is behind. And it is really that far behind:

Ok so two things.
1. The quote from their T's & C's is extra vague and doesn't necessarily say what you're implying.
2. I don't know of a business that doesn't' at least, (and I'm being kind), embellish unnecessarily and trying to do the right thing doesn't mean you are.
Funny thing is if Google and Meta are as you claim why do others KNOWINGLY use their services? That makes them complicit. If I use something that I know you've obtained by clandestine means I'm not much better than you. If I keep using that thing I'm even worse than you thought.

HUGE numbers of businesses and persons use Google services every day, have done for years and will continue to do so for years.

You actually have no idea how far any is behind. Purely a perception based on fanboism.
