How do I keep my data plan from running?

I did this and it worked for phone calls. I also added a data plan and that works too. If I have the phone on will it automatically connect to the data plan and burn through all my minutes, even when I'm not using it?

How do I deal with this?

Either use airplane mode or use a fake APN so that data will not be enabled. The iPhone can easily burn through $100 in a day all on it's own.

If I get a fake APN won't that prevent me from using the data plan ever?

Yes. To use data again, you would have to use the correct APN. The iPhone is designed to use data constantly and this is why they push a data plan so much.

You can also jailbreak and instal SBSettings in Cydia to turn data on and off.

So let me see if I understand this (I've been reading other threads).

If I put the goPhone sim in the iPhone will continue to use push data, even when it's turned off. (What if you don't buy the $4.99 or $19.99 data plans, where does it get the data from?)

In order to stop this, you have to get a fake APN, but you will still have a valid APN to switch back to.

If you don't have a data plan then the data usage is pay per use which is pretty expensive. They will charge you per Kb and take it out of your balance and that can go pretty fast.

If you use SBSettings to turn off data, the phone won't be able to use data, same if you use a fake APN. If you use a fake APN, you will have to upload a correct one or edit the fake one through settings on the phone.

Hi sorry to resurrect an old (and very helpful) thread. Anyway I'm going to be visiting the US from Ireland next week. I've got a factory unlocked iPhone 4G ( my carrier here will unlock post pay iPhones immediately) and have already bought my AT&T sim from EBay + microsim cutter which I should have tomorrow. Thanks to this thread I understand the activation process etc. What's the minimum amount of minutes I can add and do I need a US credit card to buy to 100 MB data add on? I presume the data add on is a one off purchase and is not billed monthly/on a contract? I have a PayPal account too if that helps. Thanks
