Just got back into using my GoPro Hero 5 session and recording @ 1080P 60FPS ( mostly fast mountain bike stuff )

When I edit the video using iMovie 10.1.14, then save to a file with best video options, then finally upload to YouTube the video is awful

I know its not the video file from iMovie because that video plays fine locally using the iMac & VLC, so must be YouTube

I friend said try exporting the video as 4K and then uploading to YouTube because its higher bitrate. This hasn't made much or any difference

Its also weird that you have uploaded some 4K video first and then able to export as 4K from within iMovie.

What is everyone else doing please ? Is there a solution to the problem

The problems must be in YTB upload settings according to your description.

YouTube tends to compress the uploaded videos for offering a smooth playback with minimal buffering to users, but it causes lower image quality. So you have to optimize your video parameters to fit its requirements while keeping the best quality. Optimum video settings for YTB:

1. MP4 (H.264)
2. 24fps and 25fps in progressive scanning
3. bitrate for 1080p: 12Mbps for SRD upload, 15Mbps for HRD upload

Consider the Youtube specs, from the people that own YT.
YouTube tends to compress the uploaded videos
Yup. Youtube processes every video so that it can be efficiently stored and played on a variety of devices. This includes compressing. If you meet their standards, you won't notice the difference. If you don't, you will.

What is you want to upload 4k60FPS? What is optimal settings?
