So I have a 16" 2.4GHZ 8 Core I9 with 1TB ssd and 32GB Ram.

The specs are fine, probably overkill. I love the size of the screen but the weight of this thing is a killer.
Thinking of selling it but will have to take a heavy loss. It's a £3400 machine and I'll probably struggle to sell it for £2200

Specced up a 13" - i7 1TB 32GIG ram. - £2600 approx

Am I making a mistake? Anyone find them self in this position?

Am I making a mistake?
Only you can answer that ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I personally prefer 15" form factors over 13"

As for selling the 16" to get the 13" You are correct you'll be taking a bath on selling it. The used market is geared towards the lower end stock models, configurations that are customized or spec'ed up will not get the money that the sellers initially thought.

You don't mention what you'll use the laptop for, so its hard to say that the 13" will fit your needs (other then mobility), but since your laptop is mere months old, you may be better off holding on to it.

I have to choose 13 inch because I walk to school (40 mins return trip) and sometimes I'm assigned to lecture halls with tiny tables, so a 16 inch would be too heavy and large for this purpose.

But if I drive to school and my work table has sufficient size, I'd have gotten 16 inch for sure. I used to carry 17 inch macbook pro and I simply loved the bigger screens.

I do project management. So dipping into lots of documents. A lot of web work.
The large screen helps, still struggle to have 2 windows open side by side so kind of defeats the object.
When I connect to my LG Ultrafine 5K the fans go nuts which is very annoying.
I was looking at getting an 11" iPad Pro with keyboard, keeping the 16" selling the LG ultafine 5k. I just don't get on with iPads because of always swapping windows, tabs and uploading, downloading files etc.

I'm considering taking the loss on the 16" machine, get the specced up 13" use that and when I need more screen I can hook up to the external. Forget the iPad purchase.

If you open many documents, iPad Pro won't help. I also have a non-pro iPad and I'm still using my 13-inch MBA for serious work with multiple documents, because I find that I'm still more productive using the laptop. I hate swapping windows on the iPad, not to mention downloading files on Safari is still crippled (can't download files when the download link is redirected using a script).

16 inch would be so much better when you work outside often. 13 inch is quite small, especially for web work — can't open so many documents side by side but still better than an iPad.

Well that is going to be worse on the 13"

Yep, and that's one of the major short comings of the MBP.

Ultimately its your money and your decision, but you're basically spending north of 6,000 dollars on two computes (less what you get when you sell the 16") If you can sleep at night doing that and/or are at peace then go for it. I'm in no position to judge

What are YOUR requirements?

Make a list, put priorities on it

  • Is GPU power important? If you don't know, probably not
  • How important is more than 4 cores for CPU power
  • Is a big screen important away from a desk
  • is mobility/size/weight important to use on the go?

13" machines are WAY, WAY nicer to use on aircraft, public transport, etc. Not because of weight ,but due to size - they don't need a large amount of space to open up, etc.

But compromises are made in terms of raw power. But if you don't push the machine those compromises likely aren't important.

The big questions are how much power do you need, and is mobility important. You'll need to trade one for the other.

Definitely don't rule out something like an iPad for light tasks on the go and either an iMac (if you are based at home or an office) or 16" machine for the desk (if you spend a lot of time between several offices). Trying to make one machine do everything is a compromise, and supplementing a heavier/more powerful machine with an iPad is not a bad compromise if it would work for you.

I'm personally not a fan of 15-16" machines at all because the size is awkward when away from a desk, and they're just nowhere near as good as a proper desktop when working at a desk. If you're travelling from office to office AND need a powerful machine with you whilst doing that, then they fill that niche, but if you don't need to do that, they're just an expensive, hot, loud, worse performing (vs. say an iMac) desk use machine.

Just on side-by-side documents on a laptop (13 vs. 16).... I find swiping between two full screen apps works better for me. As you say there's not enough space even on a 16" machine really to do side-by-side comfortably. Sure, trying it on a 13" would be worse, but I would argue "don't do that!". Multiple full screen apps, swiped with 3 finger gesture works better for me when away from a proper desktop screen.

So I travel between 2 offices and home.
I normally sleep on the plane or tend to my kids so not bothered about using it on public transport.
It's literally about using it between locations and around the house etc.
16" is not comfortable to use when laying down or moving around the house.
I guess I could look at an iPad for this and keep the 16" for when I'm next to a desk. I really don't get on with iPads but maybe need to just give them a chance.

Yeah if you're between two offices and not working in transit the 16" machine sounds like the better idea.

A 13" won't be comfortable to use laying down either really... if you've been away from iPad a while maybe take a punt on a base model iPad (get a Logitech keyboard case for it - not expensive and the keyboard makes them much more useful for actual work) and see how it works for you. If nothing else it will be a more convenient email reader than the 16" when you're not at a desk.

I'm more interested in using web based gmail and replying, filing away and attaching documents. Whats it like for doing that?
That's why I'm so into getting the 13" as its a smaller package compared to the 16" but a work flow environment I'm used to. Email is one of things I spend most of my day dealing with.

I would not sell, I have the 16" a 12" MacBook and am waiting for a new 13" air to arrive as its a custom build. 13" air will be for when I travel. For my slothingI have a 12.9 iPad with a magic kb when it arrives.

don't forgot that you can use external monitor on 13 inch for desktop use

So you use the 16" as your main machine? What's a good couch surfer for emails, downloads and light web work? You seem ti have every device lol so maybe you can help me?

Yep, already got an LG Ultrafine 5K so can always use that with the 13"

Or sell the Ultrafine 5K, get an iPad Pro, keep the 16". Can always use the iPad with sidecar. The problem is there are too many options.

I don't like the iPad... I try 2 time to take but everytime I returned back. Before 11, after 12.9..
Great product, nice screen, but for me it is really limited. I don't feel good with File management

Yeah, its really poor if you manage a lot of files. e.g. downloading/uploading and moving around etc.

I have the 16' as my main machine as I don't like sitting in my office on my iMac. The 12" is alway when travelling as I found the iPad even with keyboard was not good enough; I like to download, stream, file management etc so I used to take both with me. My iPad I use for Netflix, cooking recipes and use in the garden with children over this period. The 13 will replace my 12 I have just ordered a new 13 MBP and cancelled my MBA order.

To be honest I can use any of the machine for slothing, I literally like laying on my front and using my machines. So any will do. Right now while looking after my 8 month old on my 16" typing this. When on the sofa iPad Pro with a gel case, or if she is sleeping on me than 12" on pillow beside me typing.

13" - i7 1TB 32GIG ram? That’s the same config I went with!

After being indecisive and on the fence for days, deciding between 13” vs 16”, and 16GB vs. 32GB, that is the one I ended up ordering. I’m using Adobe CC and dabbling in FCP, and I think that will be more than sufficient. Also it’s much more wieldy and not prone to thermal issues like the 16” is when connected to an external monitor.

Buy with confidence! If it doesn’t work out, the return policy seems very reasonable.

Sounds like the 16” is actually a better fit for your requirements. Perhaps 32GB is probably a bit overkill but hey it is going run very smooth for a long time :)

Regarding the fan noise, check out this thread - https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/16-is-hot-noisy-with-an-external-monitor.2211747/page-55 I hope Apple will address the issue.

Also you can adjust the scaling so you can fit more windows but everything will look smaller.

To answer your question, I think unless portability is an issue I would just keep the 16” because 13” is a downgrade IMO. I wish Apple would release the 14” already...
