Is it possible to 'Clone' the drive and do a restore when the new system arrives? I'm new to this and don't know...and would like to know in case this happens to me. Will the clone process restore Boot Camp and Fusion/VM installs as well? That would be nice.

That would be really nice if they actually did that. 2 TB's plus a SSD seems like a lot for apple to clone though.. I have no way to completely backup everything I store on it. I can only backup smaller amounts of the massive data I would be storing on it.

jjahshik32: I just want to know if there are 27inch displays without this. It's your own fault for being contempt with a defective display, I don't feel the same way.

CountlovE, I just got my new 2010 i7 27" yesterday and I have the exact same issue as you (so unfortunately its not just your advanced vision!)

Mine has:
- 1 dead/stuck pixel mid right
- slight yellow around bottom right area (seamed less noticable after its first few hours use)
- bad bleed / white glow brightness around bottom right

Should I be requesting a new machine? I am worried I will get another with same or worse issues. But after spending $3000 I think I should be demanding better.

The bleed only really noticable on a full black screen (use this to test at fullscreen- http://www.blackle.com). However, it is very distracting tho as you say!! I will be going to the Apple store today see is any bleed is on their display models.

I wonder if it these will go away after a week as Lakailb87 said it might. Doubt it.

Count, when is the guy coming out to fix? Can you let me know how that goes?

max777: Ouch.. Sorry to hear that. That is horrible. But there has to be some good displays out there right? I am sure it comes down to where the screens were made, and what factory. I assume there are specs for the screens that a manufacture follows, but perhaps one factory isn't fully at spec making ****** displays for Apple. I posted on Apples forum telling people to not purchase these iMacs until Apple finds a fix. People didn't seem too keen on me posting about my real life experience with a new purchase. One reason why mac rumors is so much better than drinking the ******** Kool-Aid of others on the Apple forum.

Well Apple care is sending a tech to my work to replace the screen. They would have replaced the entire unit but that would be a longer delay. The repair place called to tell me they should have the display shipped from apple in a few days so I could look forward to a Monday replacement. That leaves me 1 week after repair to see if I am going to keep it or return it.

I really love this thing but the bottom right light bugs the hell out of me. I could live with the spill from the bottom left, but the bottom right is just way too distracting. What ever happen to CRT nanotube displays?

:(

It's a brand new 2010 i7 2.93 with SSD, 2 TB storage, and 8 gigs of ram.

Spent 4k for this thing, I shouldn't have any screen issues.. 1/4 of the display is really bright. If you change the viewing angle it goes away but then everything else is brighter. I do hope this isn't the case for all of them. You only notice it on black or dark areas such in photos, movies, or games. You won't notice it with normal usage.

I put a black background on mine and notice similar. Although it's worse if I have a steep viewing angle. If the display is angled up correctly, it's not that noticeable. Also, I don't really notice it with pictures and graphics, just the full black background.

Screen brightness seems to matter too and calibrated seemed to help also.

thanks for info CountlovE.

Its such a great machine, so fast. Gaming great on it at native res. But that whiteish glow is irritating. And ive only had it 1 day!

Thing is, my Samsung 27" LCD that this thing was meant to replace has no such problem. Perfect black conformity.

Very tempted to get a refund, and get the new Mac Pro base model when it comes out. Only real difference would be 5GB less running at 1066 instead of 1333. And a lighter back pocket.

So Apple Care are confident of fixing it? And are aware of the problem? I will have another go tonight to see if I can live with it. Otherwise ill try for replacement or refund.

hey Count, im going to an apple store in an hour. Let you know if they have they 2010 27" there and if I can notice any brightness in corners etc. I agree- gotta be some good 2010 27" displays out there!

dagomike, Ill give the screen angle thing a go. I did notice that if you look at the problem area square on and close up, it looks fine.

And full color images look perfect. Also I found this- try setting a full black background and moving a small window close to the problem area- seems to make the white brightness a lot less.

ps. what do you mean by 'calibrated'? Any tips on how to do that

max777: Yeah it runs like a champ. I am very happy to the fullest with everything minus the Display. I am not sure if Apple care knows about the issue or not. If they know about the issue, I am sure they have to be tight lipped about it until consumer reports gives it bad marks. Apple is going to become the Packard Bell of computers if this is going to be the norm. They should use Sony displays in iMacs.

Please let me know if you do find any without this issue.

no. it wasnt. images can certainly be deceiving. the bleeding could have been enhanced by background light, or blurr from the image - how am i meant to know?

Well considering you just said it was a badly focused picture tells me you were being sarcastic. It's not out of focus, the highlights were blown out which was bound to happen ...

To the OP, they'll likely replace it since it's brand new. I could be wrong.

What your seeing is IPS glow. Hate to say it, but any of the iMac 27" units will have the same issue. The new HP 30" IPS panel has the exact same issue. If it was backlight bleed, if you changed your perspective, it still would be bleeding.

I have the same issue with my 27" iMac.

In the Display/Color Preferences.

It seems to me if the brightness is set correctly for the room and the vertical angle is appropriate, it's not too bad. Disappointing, but it seems otherwise a pretty nice display. Not to make excuses, but my $0.02 is if I demanded perfect uniformity I probably should be looking at the Mac Pro. On that note, it will be interesting to see if the 27-inch LED has the same issue. I'm guessing it will and I might be kind of pissed at that.

Looks normal to me. If it goes away with you moving your head or moving the screen, then chances are that it will happen with all of them.

I have the same poblem on my imAc 27. This was a new replacement for me. I suggest that u get a new machine instead of fixing it if you are not happy. These Imacs are not meant to be serviced. Once u open it up, u will end up with another problem.

For me the bleeding is not a big issue so I decided to keep it. It is very bad when you watch movies with two horizontal bars, but if you put the brightness down it helps.

Just do normal work with it for a couple of days and see if it really bothers you.

Shot with an iPhone 4.

It fits, doesn't it?

good advice WindowsTraitor.

Based on what ppl are saying this is normal IPS glow. Shame. Will see if it bothers me over next few days.

I know what you mean with movies with horizontal bars. Another good place to see the 'glow' is bootcamp- on the windows7 bootup loading screen. The screen is grayish-white blotchy in parts where is should be 100% black.

had a look in apple store at some 27" display models just now. Glow wasn't anywhere as noticeable as mine when using all black screen. But then there is the whole thing of viewing angles/lighting conditons instore etc. hmmmm just makes me think I might try my luck at a replacement anyhow, to see if there is any improvement.

Yeah, I think a little glow is normal, but my display isn't normal. The 2nd it becomes distracting, that's an issue. Will be good to know what happens when the replacement screen comes in.

haha. You're right... its an issue :(

Think I will hold off on calling Apple until I hear how your replacement screen goes on Monday... speak to you then with the results i hope! Thanks CountlovE

HOLY ****! Apple discussions just removed my post about my iMac issue.

I mean sure.. perhaps I shouldn't have titled it "Don't get a new 2010 27inch iMac", but still.. This display obviously has some serious issues that are a huge problem..

What a bunch of Nazi's!!

I feel your pain. My 27" i7 refurb has the yellow tint problem - pretty bad. Geez, it makes one think they just recycle the defective units; probably 90% of the buyers wouldn't notice if they got a bad one.

I see where Apple changed their marketing verbiage from "Ultimate Display" to "Ultimate All-in-One." I thought this IPS technology was the Holy Grail. :(

yep 90% would be about right. everyone i talk to in person or show my screen 'issues' to look at me like I am crazy or something. Only ppl on this forum understand! :)

there is hope for getting a good screen tho. I think the two 27" pics posted on this thread show the correct 'black level/color uniformity' in the bottom right corner, where CountlovE and I have IPS glow issues with

Well i got a phone call this morning from a support tech in Texas. Guess he saw my Apple discussions post, or my email to Steve Jobs was read. He convinced me to send the machine back to Apple because the Apple engineers want to examine my unit. He said they saw the images I posted and explained this is not normal for the new units.

So now I have to backup 40 gigs of installed Steam games and go through the dreaded software install that I really hate to do..

Will let you know how the new machine turns out.

Just received mine, all was well, until i noticed this black speck of what seems to be plastic on the inside of the screen. I do have backlit glow also, but my room is a bit bright to tell how much there is at the moment.

I think if you look at this thread, you will feel like yours is not too bad.

It is for the previous model. check all these links and you cannot be sure things will turn out right. I got promised from them 4 times but still ended up a full refund. They were posted by me . tigereat
