So I would post this somewhere else but ill be honest, I prefer this area of the forum. In the PPC forum, people don't come and go, no one's rude, I could go on but I think you get the idea :p

Anyway, my new iMac 17in 2006 C2D 1.83ghz came in the mail today. I got it for about $115, what do you guys think?

Overall, the condition is great and with a little Goo Gone(sticker residue) the iMac looked like new.

At first, I was a bit disappointed that it had a GMA 950 but for a 64mb card, it runs Youtube in HD flawlessly. Makes me wonder why PPC struggles.

I think you {rude comment}…

Oh, right we're in the PowerPC forums. :)

JK with you! :D

Congratulations! For $115 that's an awesome deal I think. Have fun with it!

this is exactly why we need a vintage intel mac section here... like If i walked into the macbook pro section with an issue with my 2007 macbook pro id prolly be told oh why do you have that hunk-o-junk get a 2014 retina... LOL. my frist mac was an intel imac the very first ones iMac 4,1 i upgraded it a fair bit sadly the GPU died on it :(

I got one of these for $70 shipped with no OS on it. Used it for a 3rd monitor/light duty computer and loved it. I ended up wanting more power and sold it for $150 to add a little $ to and buy the 2009 iMac I have now.

The GMA950 one is the right one to get. While graphically it sucks for power, its the most reliable.

The upgrade bug is getting to me again as I want the mid 2010 imac with the i3 and AMD 4670 (or whatever gpu) since my iMac has become my primary light duty computer to keep my mac pro off for day to day stuff.

Looks like you got the (T5600) which supports lion, and if I'm not mistaken lion is still supported by apple, unlike snow leopard....I used to have one of these and it was rock solid....I even ran sl off a portable ssd using only usb,and it was pretty darn quick.

GMA950 version was education only IIRC. It'll use between 64Mb and 80MB of system memory for frame buffer. All the retail iMacs had the ATI X1600.

Good machines. :D

Already has ML installed but I am going to install Mavericks with a guide I found.

The GMA 950 was a poor GPU in terms of higher usage but for the average user looking to simply use it for videos, office tasks, etc. they handle just fine even in 2015. I noticed that my GMA 950 MacBooks run better with YouTube now that it is using HTML5 fully.

I have no issues with my GMA 950 powered T60 either. It's perfectly capable for routine use.

Lion is also now no longer supported by Apple. It's always the current OS and the previous 2 which receive updates. (at least so far.)

Resist that urge unless you are prepared to baby that machine and even then...

I bought that model as a present for my sister, who mostly uses it for Facebook and some Flash assisted games like Farmville.
With Apple's default fan settings the screen is displaying some major yellowing over a wide area thanks to the heat build-up's baking of the panel adhesive.

There is no fix for that although Apple did its usual thing of replacing the panel for a while rather than address the underlying cause.
My sister doesn't care. I would as it looks awful to me and, I suspect, to most people as well.

Until recently. The last couple security updates only go down to Mountain Lion, and same with the Safari updates. Looks like support was dropped with the release of Yosemite.

I use Macs Fan Control on all my intel macs so I can set my own personal fan curve. I also take apart my used macs and give them a dust cleaning inside and a like-new cleaning on the outside. I also only buy them in excellent condition because im OCD with my stuff too when it comes to condition.

Im sure most of the defective ones have died by now. I still plan to upgrade anyway as I want to be able to do some light gaming with it. (Not that the nvidia 9400m does that in this... just a bit better then that I want) You can also upgrade the i3 to an i7 cpu since that model imac has a socketed cpu.

One of the mods said it would happen, but it never did. I never want to post my issues, even on my 2011 MacBook Pro. We run older hardware for certain reasons, either money or as a hobby. By the way, WorstBuy is offering a late 2014 256GB rMBP for $1200, as much as I payed for my base model Late 2011 new. Man, I wish I had the cash :D

Maybe we should split off and start our own forum. :D

That was my first Mac. I paid somewhere around a grand for it (with Apple Care) at the Apple store. It is now my sisters main computer.

I find it kinda funny that you post a picture of a GMA950 iMac running Steam. Good luck playing DIRT 3 on that :)

On topic:
Nice buy. Wish that Intel macs were that kind of cheap in my country... (Netherlands). Even G4 iMacs go for nearly that price
